Premium servers

Just a quicky.

 

I figured that the premium servers would be quicker than the free ones. Are they just going through a funny 5 minutes or are they generally no better? Got some big files to download and I get a max of 2 hours an evening online due to work and I'm finding that I get less bandwidth. Checked my bandwidth with speedtest and the servers aren't even getting close to the low speeds I get via ISP.

 

I love the Nexus sites but I want to love them more.

Are you downloading manually or through NMM? If manually are you using a download manager? If through NMM have you turned on the threading to use 4 threads? Both will help immensely with your download speeds!

Don't hate me please, I'm using Mod Organiser for the quick and easy mod removal feature. It kinda rocks when testing. I did, however, do a manual download so I could keep an eye on speeds and that is how I know it wasn't coming down particularly fast. I guess I'll try a download manager from somewhere :smile: Hmmm or I could use NMM as my download manager!!

You may also find that the normal servers are faster for you. Here's the blurb I typically send people if they ask a question about this:

 

Your download speed can be affected by a number of issues, including your distance from the servers, your ISP's particular connection to the file servers and many local variables. As a Premium Member several new options are opened up to you both within NMM and when manually downloading outside of NMM:

• Your download speed cap of 1024kb/sec is removed allowing you, if possible, to download faster
• You can now download using multiple "threads". In NMM this setting can be found under Settings -> Download Options. Threads are basically multiple connections to the server from the same file. Say, for example, your maximum connection download speed is 4MB/sec but you can only download files from our servers at 1MB/sec. With downloading threading using 4 threads you'll download a file at 4x1MB/sec, or 4MB/sec. Handy! This also works if you're using a download manager like DownThemAll!
• You can now download from Premium-only servers. There is an additional option in NMM under Settings -> Download Options to choose whether to only use Premium servers or all servers. A special note here; Premium-only servers might NOT be the fastest servers for your connection. We offer Premium-only servers for those times (like Sundays) when the normal file servers might be really busy, and ergo, slower than normal. But it's very possible that a normal server is faster for you, so do some testing on your end and if the Premium-only servers are indeed slower just don't download from them.

On-top of this ensure that you're downloading from locations near to you. Once again you can alter this setting in Settings -> Download Options. If the area closest to you isn't working for you, try another area. It's possible, through some magic of the internet, somewhere a bit further away might actually be faster for you.

I hope this helps you and that you understand that Premium Membership doesn't just offer you the advantage of Premium-only download servers but actually a number of important bonus features over normal members.

Thanks for the tips :) And yeah I know, the extra features like no ads and full download history were my primary reasons to sub... nevermind the fact that i've used the sites for years and hammered the download servers trying out different mods for a number of games.... about time I gave you something for it ;) I was just a little surprised because I had mistakenly thought that the premium servers would instantly up my speeds... little did I know about multi-threaded downloads in NMM or managers.

 

Hope I didn't come across as whining, I just wanted to find out how people were reporting much higher speeds than I was getting :)

No, not at all. You're by no means the first and I've received much, much worse from Premium members calling me all sorts of names and making demands of me :)

 

People tend to forget that their speed is capped at 1024kb/sec on normal membership, so on a Premium Membership you should be able to download much faster than that from the same server.
