Trust BOSS or Modder?

Cold logic would recommend that you -

1. Trust TES5Edit

2. Trust the modder if they say it's clean

3. Trust BOSS

In actual practice and because I'm lazy :P it goes like this -

1. Trust modder if they say it's clean

2. Trust TES5Edit

3. Trust BOSS

I'm not very sure how BOSS' info is fed into its system but iirc it's manually fed in. So if an esp that was marked as dirty by BOSS, but has been cleaned and this info was not updated for BOSS by the people doing the updates, BOSS will still report it as dirty.

There are a few, very few mods that are definitely dangerously dirty despite the modder saying it's not. Usually because of deleted navmeshes that cannot be fixed by TES5Edit and remain un-fixed by the modder.

In any case, trust the modder. They are probably more updated on the condition of their mods than BOSS.

BOSS is not perfect. And it is way behind in updates (the BOSS team is swamped due to the vast number of new Skyrim mods.) If the modder says it is clean - and BOSS says not - it is likely the modder has newer information than BOSS. But even if it is not clean - most of the time it really doesn't matter as most ( well over 90%) of 'dirty' edits are just duplicate entries anyway.

There are very few reasons why a mod plugin should retain duplicate to master records (and it should -never- contain deleted records, which should always be undeleted and set to 'disabled'). In all of the mods I've looked at, only two cases out of hundreds of mods containing 'dirty edits' had some justifiable reason for maintaining select duplicate to master records. So if the author says there is a reason for those records to be there, they need to make it transparent and provide an explanation as to 'why.' The explanation will indicate whether they have any idea of what they are talking about.

However, keep in mind that sometimes it takes a while for BOSS to update information about the plugins in its database. So if an author has cleaned the plugin after users reported that earlier versions of the mod contain 'dirty edits', but that BOSS has not yet been updated with the new information, then you should not clean the plugin again.
