SkyUI all-of-sudden stops working, with Loot Error message (below)

Hi

Lil help?

Im about to delete all, uninstall skyrim, and install & start anew

i'd rather not do all this as I only started Anniversary edition 1 week ago, am up to level 20,and rather not go back to beginning

Here the problem

Today, for whatever unknown reason SkyUI no longer works?

Loot seems to realize this is happening as it gives the following error message:-

'Another mod seems to be overwriting one of this module's essential files. Please ensure you're using this module's version of scripts/ski_playerloadgamealias.pex.'

Here's what I tried; nothing works of all the steps below

1. I have a fairly short mod list...and I've disabled EVERY ONE...same problem

2 I disabled, removed, and immediately reinstalled latest version (which is what I already had) of SKSE (yes, the Anniversary one) & SkyUI

3. checked integrity of all files...Skyrim was good

4. started a new game...same issue

5. If by chance I enter the Bethesda mod section from the main menu…which I never do…I can SEE that SkyUI is disabled; I enable it

it then forces you to reset load order (via that same mod section from the main menu)...still same problem...No SkyUI interface

I’m more than ready to do what Loot says, to 'Please ensure you're using this module's version of scripts/ski_playerloadgamealias.pex.'...

...but I see no instructions how to do that via Loot, Vortex (which by the way notes no conflicts) nor anything else?

Anyone know what’s happening?

Anyone have a solution?

Is the ONLY solution to delete all of Skyrim and start again?

thanks; really appreciate any advice that works ;-)

eric

Hi showler,

Thanks for your quick answer

I tried your advice; didn’t work.

Although I could not find any folder or location called ‘vortex staging directory’ I did find a single file called ‘ski_playerloadgamealias, pex’ somewhere in my Steam, directory. I removed it from the directory and moved it to my desktop.

(I can’t even tell you exactly which directory it was cause removing it made Skyrim crash upon quitting it and had to Sign-out/Sign-in computer)

Retried Skyrim. Didn’t work. Still exact same problem

2. I then did a search on my entire external hard drive (where Steam, Skyrim, Mods, And Vortex resides, and now a single file appears (again) called ‘ski_playerloadgamealias.pex’ asppears in the directory called

F:\Games\Vortes\SkyrimSE\Sofia Followes v.2.51,,,\Scripts

I THINK it’s the same file ‘recreated’…but am not 100% sure?

What to do now

eric

Delete the one from the F: \Games\Vortex\SkyrimSE\Sofia...whatever directory.

That is the "real" file. The one in the Steam game directory is simply a link pointing to the one in the Vortex folder.

Likely, what the problem is is that SkyUI has that file in the BSA (the archive that it stores all it's files in), while the Sofia mod (what mod is that specifically, by the way?) has the same file as a "loose" file. Loose files always overwrite files in BSAs. Vortex can't compare the file in the BSA to the loose file to see that there is a conflict.

Deleting the file in your Vortex folder should prevent Vortex from "fixing" things by recreating the link and that should allow the version of the file in the SkyUI BSA to be used.

Odds are that the Sofia mod you are using has a warning about that somewhere on the mod page.

showler,

thanks for continuing to help

Everything you say is logical; still no success :-(

1. I have removed the offending file from the Vortex directory as you suggested. Its gone. 100% gone now

2. The Sofia follower mod (which i've used on a zillion playthrus (prior to Anniversary)...and (successfully up till today) up to level 20 on Anniversary, is called (in the vortex directory) 'Sofia Follower v.2.51 (Loose)-2180-2-51'

3. So yes, you are correct, is was a 'loose' file

4.for the record...just saying...its not an obscure mod. It may not be as famous as the wonderful SkyUI, but its practically the most famous Follower Mod in all of Skyrim, and its really great...just staying.

5. removing it didn't fix the problem

6. I don't know if this is at all helpful but if one opens up Loot one can SEE the SkyUI mod...but its NOT loaded (doesn't have the green checkmark of being loaded) that all the other mods DO have.

...and I see no menu option in Loot to LOAD/Enable a Mod...although it is clearly loaded in Vortex

7. Last you are correct they mention the same offending file on the Sofia Mod posts...and they say the fix is to load SkyUI AFTER Sofia mod...which I can see I have correctly set in Vortex and Loot both...

...but again, it does NOT show the Loading/enabled green checkmark in Loot...is there a way via any menu or tab to LOAD the file it sees?

thanks

When you say "clearly loaded in Vortex" do you mean that it is showing as enabled in the "Plugins" tab of Vortex? And has a load order number in the column to the right?

If the ESP file got disabled at some point in the process, then that would certainly explain it not working.

LOOT itself should not be able to deactivate a plugin.

Might even be worth disabling and then re-enabling SkyUI.esp in Vortex. "Have you tried turning it off and then on again" is a meme for a reason.

Hi showler

I was so excited after hours of unsuccessful trouble-shooting (with you) last eve, I couldn’t wait to play!

Getting back to you now (not in front of computer now, no matter, as working 24 hours in-hospital)

The Short Story:-

Everything works as normal…again, thank you very much

The Long story (and if you have an opinion as to what I posit below, I’d love to hear it)…but it all works, so not crucial

  1. When it finally worked, Loot showed the correct load order (with all my mods, including the offending Sofia follower, and the problematic SkyUI) in the CORRECT load order of Sofia 1st, SkyUI later loading…but when it wasn’t working the above was still the case?

  1. Vortex showed, even when working the EXACT OPPOSITE, with a Sofia Load # AFTER SkyUI…

…I seem to remember in the old NMM that it was intuitive and easy to manually change the load order…but I could not see how to manually do it with Vortex?

  1. I SUSPECT it all worked because I had removed the problematic file called ‘ski_playerloadgamealias, pex’…so I would GUESS that the Load order didn’t matter after that?

  1. At some point in all my troubleshooting with you I could see the activated Green checkmark in LOOT beside the SKYUI…so at that point I was sure everything would be fine…and it was J

  1. As to what exactly I did? I can only say, other than removing the offending ‘ski_playerloadgamealias, pex’ file, and repeatedly dissabling/enabling several times (three times?) both Sofia Mod & SkyUI, as well as via Vortex allowing SkyUI to reacquire files (again, many times, twice I think) eventually it just worked?

I really didn’t do any more than that? There was no magical other step than the above.

So that’s my story

Thank you

eric
