Canon and fair-play

I love mods, I love 'em to pieces. Right from the most ridiculously overpowered weapons to the skimpiest of female outfits, I'm a modder fan-boy. They add so much to the Fallout experience that each and every one of us goes through. Fallout canon should not be held in some sort of sacred status. If anything, for me, the modding community has produced things that I think should be canon. Take for example aeqiss' Alliance mod - why on earth would the BoS not ally with the Regulators, given their rapidly diminished manpower? Look at Named - this patch shouldn't have to exist. Oblivion was perfectly capable of naming random NPCs.

The point I'm trying to make is that Fallout 3 is not perfect. The great advantage of mods is that they let us tweak our individual gaming experiences at will. Whilst I might not want a manga-girl mannequin in my house or a pistol that shoots n00ks, I am glad that such a diverse modding community exists that we can all choose something we like.

Im just saying that people who do are just plain insane.

That's your opinion.

And it's your opinion that these mods aren't crap.

See what I did there?

I agree with him, though. The vast majority of mods coming out are garbage. This is pretty much to be expected, the mod tools are publicly available and this is the game's primary mod distribution site, so everyone's gonna throw the first stuff they make at us. It's when people with legitimate skill and talent waste their time on frivolous things that we, as consumers, start to get a little worried.

We've got people with professional-level ability making clothing for body mods. Zero functionality, five minutes worth of eye candy, and nothing of any long-term value. It's wasteful. I can't change their minds, and I can't force them to do - in my opinion - better work.

But if they're free to post this drivel, I'm free to call it out.

We've got a guy making some sweet weaponry for the game, guns, knives, all sorts of goodies. But in order to make proper use of it, I have to download his floating pot warehouse. That's actually really aggravating. I can understand making a mod dependent on, say, an ammunition mod. What Vash has done makes sense. But this island thing is just asinine, adding nothing to the game but an outlet for much better stuff. It isn't, in my mind, worth it.

Just because so many others disagree doesn't mean we're wrong, nor does it mean we have to stop saying it.

Within reason. I was fine with Oblivion having wacky mods, as the world had magic: a contrivance which made it possible for almost any mod to fit in.

However, the Fallout universe does not. This means that certain mods simply don't make sense in context of the world presented.

I would like to publicly recant anything I might have said that may have caused anyone any hard feelings. That was not my intention. In the last few months, we have lost several of some of the finest modders in Oblivion. In every case, it was the result of criticism of their work, usually by individuals quite new to the community, which by and large, supports the modders and their works, tooth and nail.

I am alarmed but not surprised by the number of individuals getting banned every day for making comments that were poorly thought out, and not respectful to the modders or the community. This was not the case before the release of F3. Look back on the records and you will see. There was a time when weeks and even months ago by between individual banning's. A single strike was a big deal!

I think the community at large, stands behind the creation of mods, over the criticism and destruction of the ideas and individuals who make these mods possible. I am sure that there are other sites out there, where the wholesale destruction of individuals and their works is quite acceptable. But this is not one of them and we are tired of losing some of the finest members of our community to bitter criticisms by individuals, who do not understand why modders mod, and are hardly qualified to make these criticisms.

It was perhaps the Op's choice of words that set me off, it is not customary here, to call people names, question their sanity, or to use foul language in our discussions. We are here to support the modders and the other individuals who choose to be a member of this community. So many never even take the time to read the rules. Rules which were created for the protection of the individuals in this community. I do not make those rules, and I most certainly do not enforce them. But I have been a member of this community long enough to know, what is acceptable and what is not. I have read in my time here thousands of topics, and have seen the damage that can be done by even the simplest of misunderstandings.

I started this post, to publicly apologize to Solon for my reaction to some of his statements. And so I do apologize.

But perhaps we should be asking ourselves, not about the quality of the mods, but why so many of the individuals attracted to the site for the resources it offers to the players of F3 are being banned.

I have known these moderators for quite some time, and they are fair, and even magnanimous in their judgments, I do not believe they receive nearly enough praise for the work they do here. They really do spend the majority of their time here helping people. And yet almost everyone that gets banned, likes to say it is was moderators fault that they were banned.

This is nonsense, people are banned here, because they do not pay attention to the rules and seem to have forgotten what courteous discourse is. If I ever fail to show respect for the individuals I am communicating with, please feel free to report me, because I will have failed to live up to the standards set by the community. If anyone finds this post offensive. I am most heartily and sincerely sorry.

I would like to see a return to a more civilized community, where respect and courtesy took precedence over personal opinions.

You may think we are all sheep here, but we are all responsible for our own statements, and thus the survival of our community.

Thank you all for listening to my rant, and I will now return to my post apocalyptic bunker, where I belong.

The rating system doesn't help at all, it asks people to be critical of those who have put a lot of work in to something and then offered to share with the community for no reward. I think it's a credit to a lot of the people here that most won't do that and instead give out nines and tens to everything. Some of those complaining should download the GECK and have a go themselves, I've spent the last day and a half tearing my hair out trying to get something I'm working on done and it's bought it home to me just how much effort goes into what appears to be the simplest of mods.
