Modding Oblivion Basics and Some Questions

OK so I started modding Skyrim and have created a couple of mods using creation kit that I like and are being used by players, but I thought I would take a step back as I'm way in to the game. For that reason I decided to reinstall Oblivion GotY and play it from the start.

So, before I do anything I have some questions about all this as I'm very serious about modding and creating them for other games as well. The other reason I decided to reinstall Oblivion is I wanted to finish the game and learn the Lore more intently.

At the beginning I'm going to install the unofficial patches, should I do that before I start the game or after I start?

From there All I need help with is some pointers as to the best way to actually mod the game, I understand basics and have links to many tutorials as well as the Oblivion Mods FAQ my intent is to use Oblivion as the testing ground and game to create mods to better my modding skills. Any info on other tutorial information would be helpful. I am studying the use of TES4Edit, Wrye Bash and the scripting tools for Oblivion, Skytim, and the Fallout Series. I haven't used any of them, but I was going to use the Oblivion one. All of this is quite intensive but I have 3d Graphic skills and want to lend them to modding. If there is anything I've missed that I need to know about I would appreciate any pointers to them. I'm very serious about taking the next step into modding and creating game quests, characters, landscapes, worlds etc..

I know Papyrus is the primary script Bethesda uses and Python figures largely as well although I'm just beginning to familiarize myself with them, I've used PHP in web mastering for a lot of years and have had script experience using other script so that would be an area I would appreciate info in as well.

Thanks to anyone for any help on this.

The easiest tutorials I've seen: http://tesalliance.org/forums/index.php?/forum/82-esiv-oblivion-school/

Covers everything from "what is the Construction Set?" all the way through to releasing your first properly lighted, pathgridded, TES4Edit cleaned house mod. And that's just the Basics lessons.

Thanks Lanceor, this looks perfect, I just installed the Construction kit and I can see it's pretty much the same format as the GECK and the CK, I'm running Oblivion on my Win7 64 bit system without much problem the occasional drop out but very minor, I installed the Unofficial Patches but it didn't like that, seems the game plays better without them on my sys. Once again, Thanks for the info!!

I haven't NOT used the unofficial patches for a very long time and I can say that they are very stable for me. However, if your system seems to run better without them, more power to you! Note that they do fix many quest-breaking bugs.

If you're a modder, make sure you have them on hand for compatibility testing as the majority of savvy mod users will have them installed.

Thanks Lanceor I have them installed but not activated, I appreciate the advice!! Yeah for some reason my system seems to be ok with the primary game, I'm running Win7 Pro and nothing too hard core in the way of issues. An occasional minimize to tool bar but I can always reopen the game with no issues.
