NCBeachBum
The combat dosnt have to be super fast to be fun, unless your a assassin you should attack fast. What's the point of an RPG in which your character can only do things you can do? The character should win or lose based upon his ratings, not upon whether or not I'm a dervish at mashing keys. I still hold out an increasingly small hope that it will still be as it should, but it keeps getting more and more faint with each official release and developer statement. And my real fear is that the combat system will be hard coded in to the point that the modders won't even be able to turn it into an RPG.
Geremeas
I wouldn't worry too much about it, NCBeachBum... if you cut out the artistic description, I don't think it will be that much different from Morrowind in practical terms. The main difference would seem to be the right-button for parrying, which, I agree, could take some time getting used to... however if they do balance player reflexes well with character stats, I reckon it should be ok. (i.e. you can have the fastest reflexes in the world but if you are playing a mage weakling, you ain't gonna parry very often! And the opposite should hopefully be true as well) Also bear in mind that, usually, players more likely to play fighter characters are players used to play FPS or arcade games, whereas gamers more keen on strategy games or old-fashion RPGs usually tend to chose to play mages or rogue characters that rely less on combat. From what I hear you (and I also) seem to fall more into the second category, so hopefully "arcadish" combat won't hinder us too much. In fact in might make the game even be more mentally challenging knowing that you cannot rely on your sword at all! But really it is fair enought that they try to keep both groups of gameres happy... MW combat system received lots of complaints, so I understand they should something about it (even though for me it was fine). Anyway, don't despair before it's time, have hope! :wink2:
NCBeachBum
To a point, I agree with you, Geremeas. I do tend to play the more complex players. But at times, I also like to play a fighter (which I usually put other sorts of constrictions on..... nothing like a moral type who absolutely refuses to steal for any reason to make getting started more difficult). I just haven't seen anything to make me think that character skills will have an effect in combat anymore. Every comment seems to be about all the player skills that will be involved now. And that's without even broaching the subject of the damned minigames. What it really comes down to, for me, is this: there are something in the neighborhood of 50 bazillion FPS, twitch, and other player skills type games made every year. Why is it so damned much to ask that one, just one, series of games stay character skill based RPG's? Every time one is made, after a few successful installments they always bow down to the pressure of the masses of twitchers pregnant-doging about combat being boring and leave their original fanbase. We're the ones who keep making these games successes in the first place. Why not stay true and keep serving us, and let all the rest play those other 50 bazillion games?I'll step off my soapbox now.
Geremeas
Hopefully this might cheer you up a bit....(quoted from Dark0ne's FAQ, it features interviews to the developers (I think)) 4.1 Will Oblivion feature a similar skill system to Morrowind?Quote Kathode:QUOTEIf you go up against a guy with 100 skill in his weapon, and you've got 10 in yours, start saying your prayers now. I don't care how much Counterstrike you play, you're probably going to die. We're not removing stats Stats will still remain an intricate part of Oblivion’s levelling and advancement system. Quote Ashley Cheng from the HomeLAN Q&A:QUOTEWe have tweaked the skill-based system, but it remains virtually the same. 4.2 If you had a low weapon skill in Morrowind and tried to hit an enemy you’d often miss, irrespective of the fact you were aiming dead on the enemy – will Oblivion follow this similar system? No. You’ve heard the whiners before “OMG, Morrowind is lame because I’m aiming at the enemy and swinging my sword, but its not hitting them”. Bethesda plan to remove this aspect of the game altogether, and instead change the system to “a hit is a hit”. You’ll hit every time now but the damage you deal will depend on a number of different variables including strength and weapon skill. Quote Ashley Cheng from the HomeLAN Q&A:QUOTEIn Oblivion, if you hit the target, you hit the target, period. The variable is the amount of damage you inflict, based on your strength, skills, and other factors. Luthiel_Dragonsoul
all this talking about the combat system in oblivion has gotten me curious, i am glad (if i interpreted the qoute correctly) that the fighting will not just be the slash, slash, slash, like that of morrowind, i hope that it will be more integrated (combo's and such) and that the radiant AI will give the npc's a more human unreliability in combat. luthiel
Adras
I was just thinking today about Oblivion, and though of something else that would be really cool. Having jobs. Not just doing little quests, but actual jobs. Like you get a certain amount of money per hour depending on your disposition with the NPC, and what kind of job. Like you could be a farmer for... I dunno, 13 gold per hour? Something like that. Law officials would be a little harder to do, unless Bethesda is adding theives and robbers and such. Or helping to run a store (and people actually come in to buy stuff. It would probably be rather hard to do, but it would be even cooler on Multiplayer. Slaiv
Multiplayer has officially been nixed for Oblivion, so that's gone. They still could be making a job system... Wait and see.
