Maybe...

I agree with you - Fable is not a role-playing game. But my definition of a role playing game has been biased over the years, after playing great games like Baldur's Gate II and MW, where you have pretty much freedom to do what you want.

Fable is most definately an RPG.

You play the ROLE of a character that you, personally, craft to your style of play.

Your character learns new skills, progresses and so on.

Saying it's not an RPG because it "more mainstream" is, well, stupid.

I say, if Xbox 2's "power" influences better graphics, and a stable frame-rate, I'm more than for it. I strongly emphasize the "stable frame-rate" issue.

You're right... But somehow I don't feel like it's me in Fable! Absolutely everything has an 'arcade-like' feeling to it! But I concede it is an RPG just as much as most other RPGs... It's just not the kind of RPG that I want. It's a console RPG... Though the game itself is quite non-linear the whole Fable 'experience' is IMO very monotonous and boring!

Before I played Fable I dreamt of having my character relaxe by the river with a bit of fishing, but when I played the game I had to frantically hit the buttons on my controller to reel the fish in... It was everything BUT relaxing and a disappointment! And it's also a great picture of what RPGs are on consoles!

It's technically an RPG, but I don't consider it one. Like I said, I consider Baldur's Gate 2, Morrowind, etc.... RPGs.

You play the ROLE of a character that you, personally, craft to your style of play.

Using that definition, anything could be an RPG. Mario Kart, Halo, etc....

Had you quoted my whole "definition" Slaiv, you would've gotten the point:

You play the ROLE of a character that you, personally, craft to your style of play.

Your character learns new skills, progresses and so on.

...which voids your "mario kart/halo" statement.

Some games like Grand Theft Auto (especially the newest one) have RPG elements and are still not RPGs because the elements of other genres overshadow the RPG elements.

Which would override my previous statment, and I'd have to say that Fable is an action/RPG. Like Zelda, but with more RPG elements.

And it doesn't really matter if you consider it to be an RPG or not... it still is.

Also, Tor... have you ever been fishing in real life?

Ahem... I believe you have all lost track of the original topic here:

Marxist ßastard:

It would be interesting to hear the predictions of other members with regards to how the XBox 2's hardware will influence the design of Oblivion.

...However, I thank you all for providing me with incontrovertible proof of the nature of the butterfly effect:

Tor_Anders:

[However], the way I see it, [the] XBox puts all the money on graphics, and IMO that is not a good thing for [RPG players] or people who want deeper games.

Turkeymoo:

...Don't forget about Fable.

Tor_Anders:

...Fable is the biggest disappointment ever; it's not even an RPG!

Valdir:

Fable is most definitely an RPG.  You play the role of a character that you, personally, craft to your style of play.  Your character learns new skills, progresses [within those skills], and so on.

Slaiv:

[Fable is] technically an RPG, but I don't consider it one.

Valdir:

Tor, have you ever been fishing [...] ?

...So please... I beg of you... Stop this twisted cycle of events before we get into a flame war over the best type of tuna lure...
