CTD when the main menu should pop up

Hey all.

The title already tells my problem.

I tried everything. Disabling all the mods that I installed after the last time I played, deleting the ini files, launching without skse, disabling menu-background mod, but the game still crashes when the main menu should pop up.

What could cause this problem? Any ideas?

This kind of problem is almost always caused by an installed mod missing a required file. Something you still have installed requires another mod that you've deactivated. The easiest way to find which mod is causing the problem is by using TES5Edit. Trying to find it manually may end up causing more harm than good. You can download it here: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/25859/?.

Once you've downloaded, extract and run the .exe file. You'll see a list of all your currently active plugins. Click "Ok", and let it do its thing. From there it will attempt to load your mod list, just as the game does. And it will fail, just as the game has. The difference is, TES5Edit will tell you exactly which plugin was unable to load, and what it needs in order to work properly. From there you'll be able to decide if you want to uninstall the failing plugin, or re-install what it needs in order to work again. Repeat this process until TES5Edit is able to load your mod list without issue. If it can do it, the game can.

Unfortunately, this will only get the game itself working. It won't necessarily get your save loaded. It will most likely give you the same message about missing data, yes. And it may hang indefinitely on the load screen, or may even crash while attempting to load. And even if it does load, the only way to guarantee that your save will load and be stable is to re-install every mod that it's ever been loaded with.

The best advice I can give you? Don't mess with your load order during a playthrough. At all. No matter how small or insignificant a mod you may be dealing with. Adding mods is one thing, provided it's compatible and won't overload your engine or system. But there are very few mods that are 100% safe to remove from a playthrough without complications - namely texture/mesh replacements, which replace vanilla assets without introducing any new elements. The vast majority of other mods introduce new information into your save that, once removed, may cause problems down the line if the game attempts to access it later. Big problems. Gamebreaking, CTD type problems.

Okay thank you  I'll come back and tell you if it worked.

EDIT: Worked :) My problem was that I uninstalled a mod that was imported to Dual Sheath Redux patch. Do you know what I mean? You have to create that patch and it will import modstuff as well. So I had to recreate that patch and everything works fine now.

Thanks for your help!

Is TESVEDIT also good for translating mods? I always used TESVSNIP but people warned me. They said it could cause problems and you can't translate everything anyway with TESVSNIP.

Far as i'm aware Tesvsnip is not to be used.
