VT08
Up until now, I'm having a bit of trouble making new races completely playable. The problem is playing them from the point of the character's birth until you leave the vault, etc. It's easy enough to duplicate a race, so let's say for the purpose of this question that I'm trying to make the Raider a race unto its own... The problem lies in that once I'm through with gene projection, there's really no "child" option for the Raider race. So, during the birthday, I am, disturbingly enough, a full-grown raider; as you can imagine, this kind of spoils the immersion. So, the easiest solution, it would seem, is to go into the GECK and make the appropriate association with "CaucasianChild" as the Younger Race and "CaucasianOld" as the Older Race. However, what this does is reset the character's race to Caucasian once I go to the birthday party. Once I'm grown up, I'm no longer playing a custom race... I am, for all intents and purposes, just Caucasian. I figure that the solution to THIS would be to duplicate the Child and Old races just to avoid this, associate THEM with the Raider as the Older/Younger race, and then I'll be on my merry way. Unfortunately, not only can I not figure out how to set up face presets for the "custom" race, but for whatever reason there's a new tab beneath Actors -> NPC that displays my duplicate "Old" race (which I created to associate with the Raider in my earlier example as an older version, so that dear old Dad wouldn't feel left out) as a new addition to the leveled list, replacing a number of existing NPC's. Please help. What am I doing wrong?
TGBlank
To create presets, i'm almost certain that all you need to do is to create a blank npc with the correct name and race and mark it as 'player preset'.

What am I doing wrong? just so you know: vanilla adult textures do work pretty well for the child races (both head & body) in fact I cobbled together a basic mod mod that let's me have four raider & a ghoul child race (I just duped the standard child races & tweaked them to use the adult raider skins (fomm was handy to extract the necessary textures from the BSAs) for presets I just duped the appropriate NPCs changed their race and selected the chargen preset option
VT08
Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm still very curious, though. The fact that so many randomized NPC's are being listed under the latest "new" race made worries me. Is this something I should be worried about, or not? I'll include a picture just for reference's sake. http://img34783.pictiger.com/images/17912411/z/ *I'm having trouble uploading pictures to this forum for some reason... I keep getting a weird error that says the image is 1.61 MB, even though it's only 136 KB! So that's the link to where I uploaded it* Really, why so many NPC's I never altered in any way now being listed as part of this race? And should I be worried? TGBlank
Maybe you edited the "base" raider this one is derived from.
VT08
Maybe you edited the "base" raider this one is derived from.Well, I didn't try to. At least, I was fairly certain that I was careful not to. Still, so much as clicking on a race to duplicate it will have the editor say you "modified" them (as shown with the asterisk that it places to the side). Otherwise, I changed absolutely nothing. I've even recreated this from the ground up several times, just to be sure. Are there any programs available for Fallout 3 similar to TESAME for Morrowind which can be used to remove unwanted changes from .esp files and revert to the absolute defaults? I've seen that as well, I think it's just the gecks way of showing the random/generic type npcs since they aren't locked as definite races. Nothing to worry about. & a link for ya...>FO3Edit< checking your mod in FO3Edit is a good idea Geck does have a habit of thinking that if you highlight a race that means it's been changed as well, I remove those entries when I mod/clean them up
