G.E.C.K. Problem

Wow thanks for the info!

I still want to move to XP though :D

I'll keep this safe and If I hear about someoen ahving this problem I'll quote you on it.

i had the same problem, which vanished after i decided to close some running processes.

To do so, i only use Process Explorer with the option "Kill Process Tree".

i closed the following:

- Windows Mobile-based device management [%windir%\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe]

- another Windows mobile component (removed it from my PC and forgot it's name) *

- Acronis Scheduler [%programfiles%\common files\acronis\schedule2.exe] *

- MediaPortal TV-Service [%programfiles%\team mediaportal\mediaportal tv server\tvservice.exe] *

- MySQL [%programfiles%\mysql\mysql server 5.0\bin\mysqld-nt.exe] *

- if the O&O-Defrag trayprogram is running and O&O is set to defrag in the backround, disable the backround defrag or close the trayservice. *

- if MDM.EXE is running, close this as well. it's the MS Debugger, that causes trouble with some copyprotections as well.

* mark services

They all got in common, that they affect drives and/or filesystems by accessing them from time to time or locking data on them.

So i recommend closing all such processes.

if this didn't help, let GECK use only 1 core/cpu. Works this way for a friend of mine.

Hope this helps, as it did for me.

i'm not a Vista fan as well, but FO3 runs smoother for me on Vista then it does on XP with all these HighRes textures.

And remember, this won't work for everyone, depending on the installed software, TSR's and services.

Due to Vistas bad service management, not all compromising processes can be killed w/o affecting Vistas stability.

Why? Most processes are linked to important ones, which makes closing the bad ones impossible or not recommendable.

Only an uninstall of the software, that process belongs to, can solve this problem.

Because of this, i cant recommend this method to people that aren't conform with processes and services because closing sensitive processes may lead to data loss and/or corruption. if enough luck is available (raise this damn att ^^), Vista may only become instable.

Well I have Windows Xp Pro SP3. I also built my own comptuer and I have VVindows Vista Home edition (its the bare minimum one had to save money)

I'm at work at the moment and cannot install it yet, as well my Boot cd is totally messed up and i'm trying to salvage what I can from it and boot from a usb instead

i don't know what you want to tell me by this, but i use Vista Ultimate x64 that came with my self made PC.

And in the end, it doesn't matter what Vista or processor architecture you use.

This problem appears on any Vista version, x86 and x64 and i could only solve it, by closing the mentioned processes.

Maybe this error can be the result of something else too.

if you're good in asm, dasm GECK and look for the error or we just wait for an update for GECK that may come (or not).

Or we get enough reports of problem solutions to figure out what it is.

But mine is the only solution i ever found and i already checked Google. Sad but true. :/

I had a group of 15 people with this same problem. What fixed it for us was updating to the latest audio drivers for our computers (Dell XPS 1730).

It appears that the crash is the result of an audio codec/driver conflict. If you have the latest drivers, you can find a codec checker and disable codecs until you find the offending one.
