AMD Mantle

Ok I don't have a great understanding of all this so let me ask. Game developers typically code their graphics use that will reach the most folks and still look as good as possible. So if the mantle is something that is for high-end PCs and such...then the developers will have to decide if they want to use it for their games....and if its worth it to reach the greatest audience? Correct? So if there are not many folks upgrading to use it...then developers may hold out of writing games that make use of it until a wider audience is able and willing to use it? Does that sound right?

Will this be something that is only put in new high-end PCs or will it reach the middle ground PCs also?

At the moment they code for DirectX which takes care of the different GPUs. The problem is DirectX is horribly unoptimised, Mantle lets developers access the cards directly "write to the metal" bypassing DirectX and getting what in theory should be a huge performance boost, it will only work for 77xx AMD GPUs and up though, older ones would default back to DirectX.

Couple this with the news about how PCs will be able to take hold of 4k resolutions and the next gen consoles will only be able to sniff at it, PC gaming's future is looking so bright it'll be like staring at the sun! Gotta wear shades.

They're struggling with 1080p@60fps Usually a new console generation comes close to PCs before falling away, these aren't even close. For PCs 4K isn't uncommon now, people are downsampling from it already.

Keep your money in your pocket and let things settle a bit, there's nothing out there that will tax your machine at the moment and doubt there will be for a long time.
