making mods run

Hello there, I hope you can help!

I'm a completely new to skyrim and discovering how to add mods. So please forgive some noob naivity.

I'm completely fascinated by the modding, but it already cost me 2 days and reinstalls and it still won't work concerning animations.

Concretely: I got the Special Edition with Anniversary upgrade, bought via Microsoft and using it on my PC desktop.

I added some mods on Vortex after watching Gophers videos and reading his intro, without any problem (map, tempered skins).

But then problems multiply, not only when I import mods from LL but also from the Vortex site (SexLab):

1. When SoS is installed, there is a conflict message (SoS and Skins) which seems to be expected. But then I can configure it any way I want (SoS before or after tempered skins), the Schlong will just not show in the game.

2. On my Vortex Dashboard, the Skyrim Special Edition icon figures now twice. The big original one to the left does not work any more and tells me "Couldn't find SkyrimSE.exe". Fortunately there's an identical but smaller icon just to its right now which works and opens the game. The icon in the line below for the Script Extender is now highlighted (orange). https://gyazo.com/d28d4ec7db958391ff2b36ecfad2b3b6

3. At the start of the game I got the message that my Skse64 is of version 0 and should be of 2.01.05 or higher. (I followed the procedures described by Gopher and shown in the video to which he refers, and the version downloaded is in fact 2.01.05). Sometimes a message pops up stating that the skse64 is of illegal origin and should be downloaded from steam. What's Steam got to do with it? I never used Steam. https://gyazo.com/126a652f9b7cdc4ef7397a89835eb544

4. After each death inworld I get an error message stating that SexLab requires Skyrim v1.6 or newer to function (which is odd since I just bought the newest version of Skyrim, or so I thought).

5. Some mods say upon hovering over their icon in the vortex mod table that no source is assigned. I have downloaded the files to the game folder and dropped them into Vortex from there. https://gyazo.com/57607f0c9cdb4582806f44ef952c1a63

BTW when the game starts it always says Special edition, not anniversary edition.

After hours and hours of trying to figure it out, I'd be happy to have some help - if in a zoom-session that would be fantastic!

Thanks in advance and cheers

1. Regarding SoS: This mod definitely needs an update for AE. AFAIK, there is an "unofficial" update somewhere on LL. Google it or use the search function on LL. Maybe you should also go through the comments section of SoS over on LL.

2. I wouldn't bother with that. In general, you shouldn't start the game from Vortex. Create a desktop shortcut for "skse64_loader.exe" and use this (after closing Vortex). Running a mod manager in the background while playing the game has no benefits - it only (possibly) makes performance worse. If you wish, you can have a closer look at how these shortcuts work later (in fact, it's quite self-explanatory). But for now, that probably isn't top priority.

3. If the game doesn't detect SKSE, it isn't installed correctly - or you have the wrong version. You need the latest version for AE. With the current version of Vortex, you don't have to follow Gopher's tutorial (although the installation process described there still works). You can simply download SKSE (you need version 2.1.5) and then install the whole archive manually (drag and drop in the "mods" tab). Vortex will recognize SKSE and install it correctly for you.

Regarding the error message in FNIS: The usual fix would be to start Skyrim once with "SkyrimSE.exe" (or otherwise start it through Steam). Not sure, what you can do about it, since you got Skyrim from Microsoft. Maybe starting the game "normally" once might also help here. If FNIS doesn't work, you can also use Nemesis. It basically does the same as FNIS.

4. Sounds like you installed an older version of SL . Make sure you got the latest version for AE.

5. Disregard those warnings. To keep track of updates, Vortex likes to have a link to where you downloaded files from. For Nexus mods, this link is established automatically. You can also add links to other sites. If you simply install mods from file, there's nothing you could do about it.

Regarding SE and AE: There's some confusion about these names. In a stricter sense, "Anniverary Edition" refers to the paid bundle of Creation Club mods. A lot of people also use the abbreviation "AE" for the (free) upgrade to 1.6.x. Technically, "AE" is still an upgrade to "SE", not a completely new game or something. So don't be surprised, when the latest version of Skyrim is still called "SE" sometimes. Nothing to worry about.

nr 5 Vortex says that because because it´s an off-nexus mod. Double-click the mod, in the panel under "Source"; choose website and copy/paste the link. That way you´ll easily find where you got the mod from.

Are you using FNIS? You´ll definitely need it.

fyi, AFAIK, GenerateFNIS_for_Users.exe needs to be run once outside of the mod-manager environment to set its working variables. Or it did when I first started playing Skyrim SE, anyway.

Also, re: LL mods, the main Skyrim SE page there has a thread called "Skyrim Special edition compatibility tracking" or somhting like that. It usually sits up near the top of the topics. And it contains a listing of all the mods and what their update status is (ie which version they work with)

Load order is crucial with some SL mods like SoS (MNC is another). Pay close attention to what they say on their webpage, in their posts or support sections, etc

Otherwise, or in addition to, what Algabar offered.

Thanks a lot Algabar! Your help was precious and keeps me going! Though much remains to be done...

1. SoS is partially solved. I installed the SoS AE 1.0.3.7z that I found on LL in addition to the SE 1.1.4.
Now in fact the schlong finally shows with SoS running (as it was without SoS just with Tempered Skins)
though instead of complete nudity now some leather briefs are added that even show through armor outfit, and Riverrun has a new shop with a vendor guy in identical outfit, hurrah!
Also all NPCs once killed and looted wear that exactly same underwear. How get rid of that butt uniform?

But more importantly there seems to exist an interface (MCM) as I gather from some internet videos that still don't show for me.
Generally I seem to have an interface problem. I don't manage to bring the SkyUI to run. It figures in the mod list once I play the game (if it starts) but I cannot tick it on.

Also my interface looks really poor in comparison to what I see on videos.

2. Ok. I originally started the game from a desktop shortcut but thought it recommended to run the game from vortex.

3. The SKSE version 2.1.5 is installed.
How start through Steam? What's Steam gotta do with it in the first place? I purchased the game from Bethesda via Microsoft.

But to give it a try, I opened a Steam account but Skyrim don't show for it's not in my applications folder and I have no idea how to get it running "through Steam".

The game (SE and AE upgrade) are both installed from some X-box with special edition game version 1.22.3.0. And still I get the message "SexLab requires Skyrim 1.6 or higher."

I rather get the feeling there is mammouth problem with this AE skyrim version after watching a video "How to downgrade skyrim SE to Fix SKSE64 & Mods (2021) - Skyrim SE update 1.6."

After days of laboring with that stuff I wonder if that downgrade is still recommended? I'd really prefer that than laboring around endlessly instead of enjoying the game.

But is that even possible with a new version bought last week to downgrade without having any former versions?

Finally I still have to disable some mods (like SexLabAroused) in order to make the game run. Vortex complains about times of files that have to be changed.
Although I gave it permission to fix it in my inventory, it couldn't fix all. It's still complaining about filetime of some BSA files having to be changed but no idea how to do that.
And it seems that without that the game just won't run - or if it runs, the mods aren't active and I can't activate them.

Hoping for further help, I thank you for your patience!

Glad you got at least some issues solved.

Now I'm puzzled myself though:

: The game (SE and AE upgrade) are both installed from some X-box with special edition game version 1.22.3.0. And still I get the message "SexLab requires Skyrim 1.6 or higher."

Are you on PC or on XBox? Also, game version 1.22.3.0 (if it really is that version) is super outdated. That would explain a lot of things...

I'm on PC. I bought the game last week and supposed it would be the latest version. 1.22 is higher than 1.6, right? What is the most recent version? If they sold me some old stuff, I'm gonna contact Bethesda.
