mooit
I'm running SkyrimSE that is what it shows me in Steam, and my SkyrimSE.exe is 1.6.353.0 Now everywhere I look SSE Fixes, SKSE, various mods, I can't use SE versions, which are listed as 1.5.97 Here's a perfect example of the well known SKSE. Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) (silverlock.org) - Current Anniversary Edition build 2.1.5 (game version 1.6.353) When I start Skyrim it says there's an Aniversary Edition, which clearly shows I don't have AE installed, and I uderstand in 2019 when I was playing SE, the EXE was 1.5.97 and I see it's now 1.6.353.0, but I'm still running SE, and I really don't get this, that's why I called it a foulup. It's really made it confusing getting back into the gaming modding, and trying to figure out, and make sure I'm running the correct versions. AND since AE is newer, we all know the DEVs are still testing AE mods, and I certainly don't want to be on those, because the SE ones are more mature and stable, but I'm finding, that I have to download and use AE versions. This has to be one of the craziest versioning schemes I've ever seen. Can someone please explain this? THANKS P.S. Have a look at my screen shot of the game menu, it menus the AE upgrade, and look at my steam screen shot, it clearly shows I'm using SE.
showler
AE is just a name they gave to the 1.6 version of Skyrim SE. It means nothing. Only the game version number matters.
anjenthedog
Any (or maybe to b careful... "many") mods that rely on SKSE64 had to be updated to work with 1.6x (also referred to as AE) Again. "AE" generally is used in comments to refer to any of the new versions, be they the "regular" updated skyrim or the literal AE version which is the updated Skyrim plus a larger chunk of CC content. technically it's a misnomer to call the regular update "AE", but that's commonspeak for you.... They do share one thing, they both use a 1.6x Skyrim executable and both require the newer SKSE64. So, scan your mod list. If you are using the 1.6x version of skyrim, any mods that have SKSE as a dependency will likely have to be updated to match/work-with the newer SKSE64 used by the "AE" (1.6x) versions LL has a compatibility list that shows which mods require newer versions to match the "AE" version, and there's a SFW site with a listing too, although you'll have to hunt around for that one, since I'm still on 1.5.97 so I've had no reason to store that site in my noggin, and only know the value of the LL list for tracking "AE" (1.6x) requirements indirectly. mooit
Does anyone have any particular preferences for gaming on with mods? I didn't know if maybe 1.5.97 is preferred if you're going to run mods on over 1.6.353.0? THANKS
Algabar
Does anyone have any particular preferences for gaming on with mods? I didn't know if maybe 1.5.97 is preferred if you're going to run mods on over 1.6.353.0? THANKSIt really depends on you. General advantages of AE are slightly better performance (at least that's my experience) and "current version of the game", which means you don't have to worry about "accidentally" upgrading in Steam. The "con" is that some mods you may like to have in your game aren't updated for AE (and in some cases probably never will be). I'd recommend going through the list linked above: There's a site to help with identifying SKSE mods updated/in need of updating for v. 1.6+: https://modding.wiki/en/skyrim/users/skse-plugins If you see, that mods, which are "essential" for you, don't work in AE, it's probably better to go with 1.5.97. If you can live without the mods that aren't updated yet, you can simply play AE and save yourself the hassle of downgrading.

I didn't know if maybe 1.5.97 is preferred if you're going to run mods on over 1.6.353.0? THANKSjust ftr... Were I just starting the game, I'd stick with the newer version , even if, like when I first started playing, some older version has more perceived features and the newer one is still experiencing growing pains. Most of the folks downgrading seem to be doing so because upgrading to 1.6x would result in losing features they found important to them when using 1.5.97. (In my case, I avoided the upgrade altogether) For the new user, at least one doesn't have to feel sad for losing something they never had (and which in mot cases will likely be re-added in some form or another later on). Truth is, personally speaking, I'm no fan of continuously revamping the game to suit a new version, having been through the process twice already for skyrim, with much hair pulling and other "trepidations" ... Always wanted to use that word in a sentence, although in doing so, I find it loses something without an accompanying languid southern drawl.
