the technical term for that 'blooming' effect is high dynamic range lighting. its used in the unreal 3 engine and theres a modified level for half life 2 soon to be released called 'the lost coast' which utilizes this technology. half life 2 doesnt have dynamic shadows though. the lost coast is speculated to be very gfx and cpu intensive and the HDR lighting for farcry is intensive. with the amount it is being used here (see the half life 2 HDR tech demo for what it will look like whilst moving) i imagine you will need a very fast gfx card and a very fast cpu to do all that in realtime.

that will probably explain the absense of real time shadows which is also a huge cpu and gfx card killer. that said, the unreal 3 engine tech demo seemed to have both of these features although i get the impression that unreal 3 will be very 'static' (like HL2 and doom 3) in order to reduce the number of complex shadows on screen.

in morrowind you could very easily stack loads of objects and light sources into one area. with HDR and real time shadows to calculate on top of rendering the scene, i can sort of see why they chose to omit shadows completely.

HDR however is like the new technology of the minute in the same way bump mapping was when it was introduced and pixel shaded water. you will probably see alot of games that utilize HDR to the point of exploitation before they acknowledge the gimmicky side of it. that said, those screenshots look amazing. i havent played morrowind in over a year (and i dont recognise these forums or the old one i was supposed to have registered at 2 years ago :O) but i will say this:

i remember thinking morrowind was the best looking game id ever played. it was jaw dropping 2 years ago. that person who posted that morrowind interior screenshot in this thread just demonstrated the increase in the level of detail and technical application - its just...awe inspiring. i am scared to think of just how far the gfx envelope could be pushed for subsequent episodes in the TES series. these TES4 screenies make morrowind look rubbish. which is quite an achievement :O
