Luscilla
It just started today and I've been playing for months with no problem. I know it isn't a mod or load order problem because I haven't installed any mods that could cause this. Here is my dxdiag. ------------------System Information------------------Time of this report: 4/3/2009, 21:00:10Machine name: JOSH-12FC99DCC2Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) iavor55
First of all-how long did it take you to type this o_OSecond-are you sure you hqavent installed ANY mod that uses slow motion. For example deadly relfex!?Also check google for this "Oblivion gamespeed bug" or anything like so.PS:after looking up on the internet i found a ton of vids and other things like that saying that they cant fix it.some people say that its conroller related....thats all i cna tell you sorry =/
bben46
First, @iavor55 it wasn't 'typed in' it was copied - a feature available on most computers called copy and paste. If you are absolutely positive you haven't installed any new mods at all, or changed your load order at all.Check for viruses or malware. they can slow you down by constantly going through your HD looking for your credit card numbers, recording your keystrokes, or just monitoring everything you do for targeted advertising (spam)Run a good antivirus and several spyware progs, not just one. Do a hard drive cleanup, run a registry cleaner and defrag.Check what else you have installed on your computer, including MS updates.Even if you disabled the aggravating 'MS index service' an up date may have restarted it.Any program that calls home either legitimate, or malware can slow things down by constantly trying to call when your internet service is turned off. And of course, something may be overheating. Many video cards and CPUs slow down when they go over a certain temperature.Shut down the computer, UNPLUG it and open it up. Clean the dust out of everything. pay special attention to the air channels on your CPU cooler and on the cooling channels on your video card. Don't forget the power supply. A small 1/2 inch paint brush and a can of compressed air are best. If you do use compressed air, be sure not to use high pressure as that can cause damage. A vacuum is needed to pick up all of the dust. It's best to take the computer outside to blow it out with the compressed air as it can make a mess. nosisab
Sadly this is a 'feature' that plagues the engine since Oblivion, and is more hard in the Fallout 3. This is a memory leak that keep growing and growing until stalling the machine. I don't know a solution to it, and it can happens at more short or length interval depending on many factors. The best I can advice is you do keep something open in the desktop before gaming... a simple little text on notepad does the trick. When you feel the game is becoming slow, do a save (may be even a quicksave) and alt tab to the desktop... this will force the OS to flush the memory... and return to the game again... Most of times it will continue normally and again, nimble... some rarer cases it can crash and so you'll need to restart at that save. Try it. PS: I think than Ctrl + Alt + Del (on XP) just to bring that little process window is enough to that something open in the desktop before going to the actual game. Indeed a simple explorer window do, you just need something, anything, open in the desktop.
JahRasta
Nosisab - if this is indeed an issue of the memory leak, another poster suggested doing a quicksave then a quickload, so I don't know if that would have the same effect or not, I just remember reading that very recently. Try it. That is among the most annoying issues on fallout... a shame Beth never managed to solve it. PS: I must say I don't know how this works on Vista, I think it works just as well, maybe even more stable. PS2: the quick load under that harder environment may be itself a source of issues. Qwaxalot
To Luscilla: For starters, Try a Clean boot. If it works after that you'll know that the problem is a background process. You can then use the task manager to locate the culprit. Also, your video & Audio drivers could stand an update. @nosisab and jahrasta: If you suspect a memory leak, you can use the console command "PCB" (Purge Cell Buffers)

It is a known issue, an ancient known issue... and one never corrected, maybe never known the whereabouts of the source(s) (or it would be solved by now). PS: Yet you are correct in your advices... those are things one must do first of all. And having as little processes and services running while game is aways good... for such I did know a little application from someone I regret don't recalling the name (and you have my thanks) in this moment, here in this forums, called "Game Booster", a very interesting utility that stop those services and some applications at the tray... and will restart all them when 'told' to terminate the gaming mode. PS: Maybe some details would help to clarify the difference about the memory using and leaking... in the first the engine have total control and can purge, allocate more and so on... the second is a memory that is allocated and never released after use, yet it is 'forgot' by the engine, that will allocate again a small amount and never release... and will be forget again.... so the engine does not have a way to release it... and with the repetition, even small amounts will become huge. When going to the desktop, the Windows will see all those memory blocks not related with anyone and will purge them... so it's how the thing works. Luscilla
Wow thanks for all the responses, guys, but I think I may have solved the issue. I defragged my PC lastnight and then shut it off for a few hours and I played Oblivion earlier for over an hour with no problems. I'll post back if I experience any more problems. On a side note: My PC is making this strange, grinding noise, like one of the fans is messing up. It's coming from around my DVD drive, but I haven't opened my PC yet to see.
