Limit fps

Hi I'm looking for a way to limit my fps in oblivion maybe there's a console command to do this? I've had a google around and couldn't find anything useful so thought I'd ask here. The problem is my fps tend to fluctuate from 60fps to around 35fps and this can cause annoying stuttering so im looking for a way to limit the max fps to around 35-40 fps to stabilize it so the fps drops wont be so noticeable.

TIA

It's not the fluctuation the stuttering reason, if you use onboard sound, for the strange this may look, is where you must seek first. For testing purposes try disabling the music and sound in the ini file. if it sensibly reduces or disappears you'll know the guilt... by the sad side, it's something I don't know a solution other than going to a good, hardware accelerated sound card.

Note that is not only because the onboard sound uses the CPU for most it's processing... it's more about the Interruption Request (since the CPU will indeed stop waiting for it's completion, thing that in the independent card will stop just it's processor) and other hardware issues that in some cases may cause even small pauses. That issue do not show up in DVD movies and such and so the sound 'sounds' great... not valid to gaming, though, I fear.

I agree with disabling sound for testing purposes, However there is a mod called "Oblivion Stutter Remover". You can also "clamp" max FPS in the .ini file

Thanks for the replies maybe I should have given you a bit more information

My Specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 @ 3.2Ghz

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3

4096 MB (DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM)

NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT (512 MB)

Creative SB X-Fi XtremeGamer Sound

I'm also running Oblivion with Qarls Textures (the reduced pack) @1440x900 on Ultra high settings with a few sliders reduced in the game options I've also tweaked my Oblivion.ini

following this guide http://www.cyrodiil.net/html/oblivionini.html. Now most of the time I do get 60fps but just every now and then it will drop to around 30 fps for a few seconds mainly when its loading more textures I would imagine and the drop of 60 to 30 is hugely noticeable so I thought I can eliminate this by limiting the fps to around 30-40 so when it does drop it wont be as dramatic too me this game should be perfectly playable at 30 fps. I'm gonna try too clamp at 30 and see what its like. Thanks again for the replies.

well, this sorts out sound issues, but just to be insistent, if you do not do yet, try using a mod named "quiet feet", by my own experiences most Oblivion's stuttering issues were related to sound... of course, with high texture resolution mods, going to some graphical tweaks may help alot.

If it's the case you could want to follow the advices at this tweak guide site, that have very good advices to this and several others nowadays games.

good luck. Operation Optimization is a good mod you should try, too. About clamping... that's ok... just avoid something that involves setting on the Vsynch... something that is known to create more problems than solve them.

Ok I'll try the quiet feet mod but the Operation Optimization mod I'm unsure of using due to the fact it doesn't give much information on what its actually changing but thanks for the suggestions. In regards to the clamp setting in the oblivion.ini all that seems to do is make everyone walk twice as fast when I set it to 30. I have another problem which is bugging me is when I set the an ingame slider to say 50%(Actor fade or similar) I load a save game and they all reset to 100% :S which is very strange. Any ideas?

I should have mentioned that side effect with the clamp, consider a compromise, something like 40 or 50?

The second issue is, I believe, that the .ini is not getting updated. Oblivion updates the .ini when you exit the game. If you're like most of us you're CTD on exit.

You can fix this by using the console command "saveini" before exiting.

Ye I kinda figured it would be the ini not being written to so I've gone through and manually changed it to the settings I want. Nah I don't get the crashes when exiting cause I use this mod http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22410 . As for the fps I guess I'll just have to live with it, tbh its not a game breaker and only happens rarely, it would have been nice to fix it but meh I can handle it :D

I use streamline v3. Although some in the forum don't seem to like it

I have found it to work quite well.

It allows you to set both max and min fps. It also purges your memory

at times you select - fast travel, sleep & wait.

One thing to be careful of is the way it readjusts your video settings.

Be sure to set the terrain to (0) =off, or it may turn off your distant landscape.

This is especially true if you are on a long ride through the bush.

I keep the all the other setting on as it then adjusts everything slightly instead of

one or two things dramatically.

There is also a vLOD min and max (30 &100 for me)

I have set my fps at 15min 30max. I reckon you could probably set min to 20.

I also turn off streamsave.

I have similar specs to you - Opteron 180 processor/ 8800GT/ 2Gig DDR RAM.

The faster processor and RAM your machine has should give you pretty smooth running,

but I expect Oblivion will always be a little jerky for me as I am willing to sacrafice some

unevenness for more eye candy.

btw - You shouldn't have to set your actor fade that low, unless you like being snuck up on.

Ah very nice post Boss that has helped me a lot . I was actually using Streamline to clear the memory had no idea that it could do the other things you mention ( I should try reading a bit more ^^ ) and it also explains my graphics settings not staying at what I set. I'll install it again and try with it and see what happens.
