Nifscope Blockhead Error

Recommended Posts

I've just recently downloaded Nifskope and every time I attempt to edit Oblivion face meshes the image that shows up is a white untextured face that says "Install Blockhead". I've also encountered this issue when viewing meshes in the construction set but this problem doesn't seem to show up in-game. The character's OCO2 textures look how they're supposed to when I launch the game, they only seem to glitch when using editors.

I've installed OCO2 via Wyre Bash like the mod author recommends and the OBSE folder is installed where it's supposed to be. I've searched online and there doesn't seem to be anyone else who's had this problem so I'd appreciate some guidance on what exactly I'm doing wrong.

Mine are like that in NifSkope too (and always have been as far as I can recollect). Never been an issue for me as I don't try and do anything with heads in NifSkope.

You can change the paths to the texture files in each NIF but you will need to know exactly what you are doing unless you don't mind eliminating the error face permanently.

The NIF files to change are the headhuman_F.nif and headhuman_M.nif files (do not change headhuman.nif ... that is the file that displays the error face in-game when Blockhead is not working). The texture path just needs to be updated to textures\characters\imperial\HeadHuman_f.dds for example when you are changing the Data\Meshes\Characters\imperial\headhuman_F.nif file.

Blockhead allows OCO v2 to assign separate meshes and textures by both sex and race, but those changes aren't seen by NifSkope as it only goes by the textures assigned via the mesh file.

This is not an error or a bug. This is intentional. The OCOv2 creators made it so the default head mesh shows this texture "unless" Blockhead is used and the proper race-based head meshes and face textures are used instead. If this texture shows in your game, then you know Blockhead isn't running, else it will never show.

"Of course" this only works either in game or in an OBSE-using editor (The CS-E for instance "should" show the proper heads, as it's also running OBSE, thus Blockhead, itself). Neither the Vanilla CS (no OBSE, no Blockhead) nor NifSkope ever will.

"But" NifSkope won't for a totally different reason, like Striker explained. NifSkope only shows the texture as set up inside the NIF. It also won't ever show Argonian, Khajiit, Redguard or any other race's textures on the other body parts, or inside armor/clothing. Only the game or the CS will/can do that.

If you change this texture inside the NIF, it also won't have much of any effect on the result in the game or NifSkope, where the engine overrides texture and material settings based on race. But you can totally mess up your game, if you change it to a texture that doesn't exist or has its normal map missing!

I see thanks for the information. I'm pretty new to modding so I'm still learning how all these systems work.

I've found a page that said to add "textures" to the beginning of your path and the meshes are showing now. It at least the "Remove Blockhead" skin.

Cool. I can also confirm it is the same in Blender, as I loaded the Imperial Head there ones. INSTALL BLOCKHEAD all over the head or similar. :D

Cute Elves and Rens head does not show that Blockhead texture as those 2 heads do not use Blockhead. Editing heads with a 3D tool or 3D editor? Well be careful with those if you are not 100% sure what you are doing really. Textures makes such a huge difference anyway, as mentioned, so leave the shape as it is. My best tip  We do change the shape in game or in CS / CSE and we do have enough options with all the sliders. But OCO2 seems to reshape them so no matter what I do in CS, the heads ends up similar to each others. One way to get good or best control over the face generation and editing with the sliders in ShowRaceMenu or CS / CSE is to loads Blockhead. I did that in CS a year ago, so load the esp you want to edit and also check Blockhead or load OCO2 as Blockhead is not an esp right? OCO2 is an esp. Set your file as active and check OCO2, load them, slide around the faces. Good Luck :D Make me a beautiful head now will you? OCO2 rocks
