Shakkara
*laughs* I got 98SE. [player->rantmode 1] Wow! What a virus/worm! It just causes me some minor annoyance! Boo vulking hoo! You guys don't know what true virusses are. I on the other hand have seen them in the old days. Like killing harddrive whenever it pleases, and then copying itself back to it from your CMOS or hiding in your MBR to do it again! And today people panic when some virus/worm REBOOTS the PC! OH WOW! HOW DESTRUCTIVE! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE! *edits registry in DOS and kills so-called virus* Then some so-called virus removes your partitions. OH WOW! *runs maxblast, partitions back, MBR restored, everything works* You guys never seen any REAL virus, and pray that you never will! Death_Penalty
*Nods head in approval to Shakkara's ranting* Thats right kids, listen to your elders. Why, I would get this lecture every day from my dear sibling.... By the way......firewall anyone? I have the sneaky suspicion that firewalls prevent it. [player->rantmode 0]lol :D thats true i suppose... back in the days when logging onto the net was TRUELY risking ur computer's proverbial neck. :P and yes death i never got the virus and im on XP, i keep my firewall up 99% of the time and keep it up to date as best i can (aka whenever i remember :P) thank god for automatic live update :P so i dunno if it would have defended against it originally but it got updated around the time the worm thing was around
Shakkara
Firewall in router, firewall in dedicated 486 machine, firewall on PC. I don't have them up all the time though, just using common sense when you surf and download helps a lot. Checking your active connections with netstat also alerts you of most potential threats, and just cleaning out your registry manually on a regular basis makes you spot most suspicious stuff as well. Or check your REAL active applications with a memory editor. And just KNOW your PC and KNOW when it starts using the HD when it shouldn't and slows down when it is not supposed to. Then know how to ACT when it happens.
SothThe69th
In my day by gum, we caught virus's in Morrowind that changed EVERYONE into Fargoth, lowered our FPS's to 2, and made our view distance so low we couldn't see our hands in front of our faces! AND DADGUMMIT, WE LIKED IT!
HeLLL
If you do have a firewall it does seem to stop it. I disabled my firewall and logged onto this site and recieved the file <msblast.exe>. Pretty funny worm though. Seems like this haXor spent some time thinking this one up :) not like th usual script kiddie DDoS attack or a strange variant on the Bugbear worm
Shakkara
Heh, the better variant it the one that reboots your PC while STARTING windows, even in safe mode, so you are forced to use DOS or a second HD to remove it :D
FabFour
lol, I had a virus once who deleted rundll32.exe, I couldn't start any programs at all so I had to copy the file from a another guy who had the same windows version as me. That virus was annoying :P
