construction set ctd in npc dialog

hii so the problem is when i go to view an npc in the npc dialog box the construction set crashes. i can load files fine, edit other things in the dialog (inventory, factions, etc) and load cells in the render window but i cannot preview npcs within the dialog. this happens when selecting head and when selecting full, as well as when navigating to the "face" and "face advanced" tabs.

i have tried:

checking "full" before checking "head"

checking "head" before navigating to the "face" tab

opening and closing the npc dialog before loading a preview

loading only oblivion.esm

loading only oblivion.esm and the active file

loading oblivion.esm and the unofficial patch and the active file

running as administrator

the files load fine, the dialog opens, but when attempting to load a preview the program freezes for a few seconds and then crashes to desktop. loading the preview window via the cs toolbar "view" menu also results in a ctd. i'm using 1.2 and the construction set extender. i am at my wit's end.

There are 2 ways to solve this. Firstly. This is a bug many of us have.

  1. Click the other TAb first, the one called [Face Advanced] and always click that one first, so the head loads and then you open the [Face] Tab.
  2. Use CSE as it does not have these problems as it use different code, not the original.

If you use ENB, you also need to use my BAT-files when you use CSE and want the game to run without loading CSE stuff, which will only slow down your game and give it bad annoying performance.

My batches will:

  1. Close down ENB when you run CSE
  2. Close down everything related to CSE when you play the game

You must run the game and the CSE with these 2 startup files. If you forgot to use them, the game or CSE will not work properly. But it is the only way I know how to use all good stuff at almost the same time.

ENB 0.259 is a must for stability together with ENBoost which is the main file here. They will not work good without each others nor stand alone. Use both. They love each others as much as a bear like Honey.

I always put a tick in the Preview box (lower and a bit right of center) before clicking on any of the tabs for Full or Face, otherwise I also get the lockup (though I don't get a crash ... just need to Task Manager my way out of the CS).

ignore this one i uninstalled and reinstalled again and it fixed this part. still getting the ctd though

i had cse installed but i reinstalled it to be safe and now this is all that shows up in the cs. trying to bring up other windows in the "view" menu changes the check in the menu but doesn't actually bring up any windows. opening the "all open windows" dialog says no windows are open.

putting a tick in that box is one of the things that makes it crash.

i don't use enbs. i am using cse. clicking "face advanced" also results in a crash.

All I can offer is that back in my WinXP days the issue never surfaced ... it was after switching to Win 7 that it became a problem. I can't say what further issues Win 10 may have brought to the table as I'm still using Win 7.

- Edit - Also still just using the vanilla Construction Set, so no advice concerning CSE.

Not sure whether the following also applies to Oblivion, but in Fallout 3, a similar problem was resolved only when certain pre-conditions were met: "The editor will sometimes crash when editing dialogue infos. This seems to happen on Windows Vista or Windows 7 systems with Realtek audio cards and appears driver-related. A simple workaround is to plug a mic, headphones or speakers into the mic port."

Very very odd workaround but I got similar problems with CS and I also use Real-´tek audio, which explains my crashes too. But it was only CS that crashed, not CSE but it crashes daily anyway. I do have headphones plugged in.
