GECK and XP64

I've got 4GB of ram, so naturally I need a 64bit os to utilize that amount. And since Vista and Win7 kinda suck (well ok, not so much win7 but the lack of surround sound support makes it fail anyway), I'm stuck with xp64 instead. I've got it installed and running ok, everything works generally, but upon installing the game and GECK, it seems something doesn't like something else somewhere. Within literally a few minutes of opening up the GECK it had messed up to the point it was unusable (render view was blanked out entirely, couldn't place anything properly even when the render view was still working, various other glitches), so I wondered if anyone else has tried the GECK on xp64, and if so whether they had problems.

Kinda sucks to have all this memory but not be able to use it because of crappy 32bit windows not supporting it, but it also sucks having the ram recognized but still not being able to do much with it because 64bit is STILL unsupported mostly.

Oh yeah, and I also upgraded to the 1.4 patch for the first time, so I guess that could also be a contributer. With win32 and the 1.1 patch the GECK worked fine (apart from its usual slew of bugs anyway). Thanks in advance :)

edit: so yeah, I was just about to uninstall the game and reinstall with the 1.1 patch to see if that helped and...... the uninstaller is broken and won't work. So something tells me win64 is a bad plan if you want to mod this game at all ;_;

Well, as much as I poke fun at Vista, I've actually had MUCH better luck with Vista on my laptop than i EVER had with xp64 on my other desktop (may it rest in peace.. er.. pieces). I had far more compatibility issues, mostly with software that was SUPPOSED to be compatible. I'm running good old XP pro on this machine, and love it. And supposedly, with SP2 and later, the 32 bit XP Pro can read up to 4GB of ram. Although not all 32bit applications can access all 4GB. (not sure why, just based on lots of reading. Everyone says what, nobody says why)

What, they actually added something back in to replace the missing HAL they removed from Vista onwards? I'll be impressed if that's the case, though I honestly don't know if it's worth reinstalling windows 7 just yet, I didn't care for it much, though it's definitely an improvement over that abortion called vista :) I've created a new custom iso of my old win32 disc now, gonna go back to that for the time being, at least I know it works and is 100% stable.

@eezergoode: I had 3.4GB recognized on 32bit xp, but I've paid for 4GB and would like to use it heh. Guess that's not happening for now though. I do modelling and image editing, so I do tend to chew through quite a lot of RAM, hence why I decided to get 4GB in the first place.

Well, I've just been attempting to use the GECK on xp32 again and it's doing what it was doing on xp64. I can no longer drag/drop character or creature leveled lists into the render view to place them, it just gives me the 'can't do that' red circle symbol and won't work. Anyone got any ideas? I'm at a total loss, this game and its editor seem to work and break completely randomly without even needing to do anything to them first.

I'm using latest drivers for everything, my ram is fine (already tested), and I only use the cccp for codecs, I don't install crap like k-lite. Everything else is exactly as it was the last time I was modding the game. Drivers seems most likely I suppose since I upgraded to the latest ones before I reinstalled windows this time, I was using a slightly older version for graphics and sound before. Honestly though, I would expect newer drivers to FIX issues, not cause them heh. Oh well, I don't feel particularly inclined to spend hours of my time trying to fix something that shouldn't be broken, so guess I'll just uninstall the game for now and hope it works the next time I feel like messing with it.

Thanks :)

I am running XP64. I am going through the GECK tutorial now without any issues.

Maybe as I learn to use it more effectively I will start to stress it and see some problems, but so far, so good.
