Thanks for responding to my post so quickly! It seems i need to have the geck running to install mods? I downloaded the geck but anytime i try to use it it just lets me update its files. From what I have read it was an issue with vista and the default setting? so i put fallout and the geck in c:\user\documents\my games\fallout 3 and i cannot get it to run so help with either topic is most welcome. Thanks again.

Perhaps i know less than i think when i look up fallout on my start menu the only place it shows it is in C:\documents\my games\fallout to better respond to your question is there another way to find a program? thanks

For each Program you install, the Installer asks you to define an Application Path.

That's usually: C:\Program Files\ X <-- here

If you run Vista, there are Problems for Modding the Game in the Default-Path, so it install it to another Location.

I wrote a Tutorial How to install Mods, that aimed to be simple and leaving out all the information you don't need if you "just want to install some Mods" and having no clue how to start.

Thanks for the help. I read that guide and i thought by putting it c:\user\documents\my games\fallout 3 that would solve the vista problem with the default path. your guide suggests d:\ on my machine that is my dvd drive, with my limited understanding i thought you couldn't install things to that. I will try an uninstall and reinstall to the D:\ drive and let you know if i have any luck. :edit: I am trying to reinstall it in D:\games ect and it informs me that it is write protected and cannot be used. sorry for my lack of understanding is there some way i can install it on c:\ or do i need like an external drive?

do i need like an external drive?
no
I am trying to reinstall it in D:\games ect and it informs me that it is write protected and cannot be used.
What is write protected? The whole D:\ drive? There should be an option to disable the write protection. Maybe someone who is more familiar with Vista can tell you more about it.
