Vista VS. Win XP

I am going to be writing a very basic and easy to read / understand for noobies kind of walkthrough FAQ about the two and their relations to Oblivion.

Personally, i have never really had problems with tes4 (only played tes3 on the xbox and never got to finish.. it broke.. the box did i mean.. so X goes the box.) and i run win xp.. but i hear people with some problems, and ALWAYS hear problems about vista.

I do not have nor ever will have Vista. It sucks. Plain and simple... SO i can not really write about it much.

Instead of going acheology on this forum (cant spell, very late at night) i am just ganna post this thread.

Please describe all issues you have ever heard of / run into with Vista OS pertaining to the elder scrolls games, modding, installing mods, playing, anything. And answers to the questions that you see posted here

Also, describe the problems run into (if any) with win xp... and.. Can you play oblivion and run without problems using linux? i never asked.. never knew.

This thread, until its eventual deletion when its at the end of the line, will most likely help a lot of people with similar questions when they read the answers. After which, i will post a thread containing only the answers with the questions (meant to type visa versa but because im a much faster typer this takes less time to type than to press backspace... god im so lazy it doesnt even make sense)

Hope this thread will help a lot of people to come in solving their problems and getting to play tes4 the way its meant to be played. With mods!

If you intend to mod Oblivion on Vista, don't install it into the default "Program Files" folder, otherwise UAC or whatever its called will bite you in the rear end.

Or so I've heard. I don't use Vista for the same reason as you - it's rubbish straight out of the box (it CAN be fixed into a good gaming platform however.. needs some massive pruning on the bloatware that M$ stuck into it)

Vista is worse for gaming in terms of any game. It takes more RAM and CPU than XP. Look at system recommendations of any game. If it asks 512mb of RAM for XP, it will be 1GB for Vista.

I had major issues with a lot of programs using Vista Ultimate 32 bit, especially Oblivion which frequently would CTD despite having tried everything in the book.

I've since got my hands on a copy of Vista Ultimate 64 bit and it's far and away the most stable OS I've used since Windows NT.

I have not had a single program crash since I installed it. It's been something of a pleasant surprise since most people have the exact opposite experience.

You need 1 GB of space to install windows XP. You need 15 GB of space to install Vista. nuff said.

Smart move Dezi getting XP. Vista has experienced the worst sales (off the shelf) of any windows operating system since windows 3.0. Even the people at Microsoft have admitted in interviews that it is a bloated system. There are people who defend Vista but then again, there are people who defend former president George W. Bush too.

Thank you for the article, Bben! I found it well-written and informative. The history lesson is especially needed for those who are too young to remember it. I myself remember well the public's slow, grudging and panic-filled move from Win2K/98 to the bloated, resource-hog, unstable and incompatible XP.

As for myself, I've been using Vista for about 2 years now, with no troubles. It's fast, it obeys my commands, it runs all my games and other software, and it has useful features that I miss when I have to use someone else's XP system.

Have had zero problems with Vista 64. XP cannot take advantage of the current generation of processors or ram upgrades. Also considering pretty much all games utilize dx10 now it is a forgone conclusion. Buying a new high spec PC to put XP on it is silly, especially if you are running an i7 or other quadcores.
