SSE FYI: Mini Tutorial On Multi-Effect Enchants And The UI

Hi.

 

I always hated the lengthy duplicated descriptions in the UI for multiple enchantments...

 

You know what I mean: Archmage robes is the worst.

 

If the enchant boosts more than 1 skill, every one is listed in tiny writing for each instance of the added magic effects. For an enchantment with 6 effects, you end up with 6 active effects, all of which are so lengthy, they're unreadable.

 

A mod I'm working on re-balanced the Archmage robes and added another 2 effects. In-game it looked awful. Enough is enough, I thought and set about experimenting. I now have only one active effect listed and it is a concise summary of the enchantment. Here is how to do it...

 

 

  Reveal hidden contents

Create magic effects.

 

If they exist already, duplicate and rename them to suit your esp naming convention. If not, make your own.

Leave the description blank. If you duplicated an existing magic effect, delete the description. This is vital!

For each effect tick the 'Hide In UI' tick-box.

Create a new magic effect that is blank. I set mine up to be 'Value Modifier', 'Constant Effect' and 'Self', like all other enchantment effects.

Important! Give it a suitable name. This name is the title that'll show up in the UI: I named mine 'Fortify Spells And Carry Weight'

Add no effects to it. Add nothing at all to it, except for a description...

 

The Description For Your New Blank Magic Effect

This is vital. Add a description to your new blank effect that suits each and every application of your enchantment. This description is what the player will see in the UI.

 

For my Enchants, I wanted to fortify all magic spells by a percentage and add twice that value in 'Fortify Carry'. I have 5 levels on different armour, so MBABenchMageGloves01 to MBABenchMageGloves05, to stick with my naming convention and the vanilla magnitude convention. Your ID will be different and suit your own esp.

 

My description reads: All spells cost <mag>% less to cast. Carry weight is increased by twice that amount.

 

If you use this magic effect only once, without altering any magnitudes, you could naturally skip the <mag> part and simply add the value. Don't over-complicate it, though, or else you'll still end up with a daft looking essay in tiny print!

 

You're done with the magic effects.

 

Add Your Enchantment(s)

Set up your enchantment(s) in the usual way.

Add your working magic effects (the ones with no descriptions) and set the magnitudes.

These will be new enchants, so no need to worry about descriptions... just don't add any!

While none of the magnitudes set here will affect what the player sees, it's vital that they match the format you set out in the description on the blank effect.

For me, my MBABenchMageGloves01 had all magic skill enchants increased by 8%, Fortify Carry Weight was increased by 16. So you see that this matches my description: carry weight is double the magic skill effects, just as I described it.

Finally, add your blank magic effect. Give it the same magnitude that you want to see reflected in the UI. For me it was 8. If you have several enchants and used <mag> in the description on the blank effect, not setting a magnitude will result in your UI description reading 0%, which will look stupid. DO NOT tick the 'Hide In UI' tick-box!

 

The Result

 

If you've done it right, you will now see only one active effect.

It will have the name you gave to your blank effect.

It will contain the lovely short description that you added to the blank effect.

 

My Active Effects now reads this, with my MageGloves01 equipped...

 

Fortify Spells And Carry Weight: All spells cost 8% less to cast. Carry weight is increased by twice that amount.

 

That's it. A nice clean 'Active Effects' section of the UI.

I just thought I'd add this, together with a few tags, because I could find only one webpage when I searched and while it gave me a clue, I spent around 3 hours nailing it. Sometimes when you're almost bald by pulling your hair out, you should try and prevent other modders from doing the same.

 

I hate all those 'hair replacement therapy' adds on the TV.

 

If this little post cuts down on their advertizing budget and we see fewer adds, then my work is done.

This kind of work is past our intentions, but it is very helpful for future ideas.

 

And we just recently read that those minoxidil tablets are quite the miracle for thinning hair.

 

No one had studied for differences in results between the tablet formulation and the topical ointments!

 

One of our moms started it, and is already getting results around her hair-part. Fwoosh!
