You are Gordon Freeman, a scientist for the Black Mesa research facility, a secret underground laboratory, and you are about to have the worst day of your life. It starts like any other working day – commute to work via high-speed underground railway, passing through several large blast doors and many security checks on the way. You don your working uniform – a top of the range electronic body armour – and make your way to the high powered anti-mass spectrometer. Unfortunately for you, today’s experiment blows up in your face – literally – and you are left to fend off both the alien menace you’ve unleashed upon the planet, and the marines sent in to “clean-up” (read: kill everyone) by the government.

This is where the game would normally start, but Half-Life isn’t a normal first person shooter – you get to play through this introduction, in fact the entire game is seen purely through the eyes of Gordon Freeman, and you are in control 100% of the time. A main selling point of Half-Life is that it is very easy to make modifications for it – these are add-ons to extend the gameplay, even to make new games, and there are many official and unofficial add-ons available, many of them free, to extend the life of your purchase.
