ruvuk Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Could somebody tell me what Auto-Move does? The few times I've tried using Auto-Move, my character would take off running and keep running until I stopped him. I couldn't think of a time when a player would want that (given that we run half the time anyway just by holding down the [w] key). I wondered if maybe Auto-Move was something the player could set--like having a little macro for the game. I'm asking about Auto-Move now because a few times my character has gotten away from me. Specifically, when I press [w], he runs, but if I use Caps Lock b4 pressing [w], I don't get a walk--instead, I get something that looks like race walking. Can't slow my guy down! Sometimes, I can fix this by saving, clsing the game, and returning to that save. But other times, I have to go back to an earlier save b4 the hyperactivity got started. I'm wondering if this is just another Skyrim quirk that players sometimes have to live with. But maybe it's somehow connected to the Auto-Move key? Thanks for your attention here. Any and all feedback would be genuinely appreciated. :o)
myztikrice Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 You've never ran for more than a few seconds? Why hold a button down instead of just pressing it once? This seems like such a strange thing to be confused about. Do you use any slow/speed up enhancing mods like Requiem or Achieve That?
ruvuk Posted November 16, 2013 Author Posted November 16, 2013 @Faithful poster: So maybe I'm strange? <lol> That'd probably explain some other things, too. . . . Seriously, . . . sure, I run for longer than a few seconds at a time. I rarely use Fast Travel, so I spend a lot of time traveling around Skyrim. And I usually run. But I can't imagine running with Auto-Move. Maybe that's because I don't usually use the paved roads? Running off-road, I'm constantly adjusting my direction or jumping over something or scrambling down a moutainside. As for keeping a finger on the [w] key, . . . I'm usualy not even aware of it. When I'm playing, my hands are on the keyboard or mouse all the time. My coffee usually gets cold because I'm forever thinking that I'll get a swallow just as soon as I finish whatever I'm doing in the game . . . but then something else gets going . . . and then some other thing . . . <lol> . . . About the problem I have with the occasional erratic movement speeds, . . . nope, I don't use a mod to speed up or slow down or anything like that. I'd like to, but I've just never gotten to it. One day. I'm actually wondering if maybe it's time for me to get a new computer. I need a new one for work, and I'm guessing that Skyrim would be a lot more fun if I had a machine that could handle some of the heavier mods and the game's own highest settings. Thanks for your note. :o) (And, just so you know, . . . while I may be strange, I'm pretty sure I'm not weird.)
IsharaMeradin Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 The auto-move button is so you don't have to press the forward key (usually W). It defaults to whatever you have currently set as the active mode running or walking. Caps Lock toggles that value (I changed mine to X). Sprint is what looks like a real run and takes up stamina. It only lasts for a short time (as long as you have stamina) and so they called it sprint instead of run. Otherwise, they should have been called Walk, Jog and Run. Personally, I do not like always running whether auto or not. I have bAlwaysRunByDefault set to 0 in my SkyrimPrefs.ini This way, I don't need to toggle my run/walk. I can use auto-move on long walks or hold the Shift key as I run. I'm not a marathon runner so I don't see my character as able to run the full distance of the map. Nor can my finger hold the button down that long... so there is my touch of realism and strangenees. :P
ruvuk Posted November 18, 2013 Author Posted November 18, 2013 @IsharaMeradin: Thanks for the note. I like how you play your character in the game as what would feel right or natural for you as a real person. That's how I play, too. I happen to like the "run" pace; it feels like a comfortable jogging pace to me--just the sort of pace one would want if planning to jog for a long distance. I like walking, too. I'd probably use the walk option a lot more than I do if it just weren't soooo slow. In real life, I walk faster than that for sure. Anyway, it's helpful for me to know that Auto-Move is either Walk or Run and not anything else. One more quick question? I'm *guessing* that the Auto-Move button is turned off by simply pressing the Auto-Move button again. That right? I think my problem right now is that my Auto-Move button gets stuck sometimes, which is a real mess. I'm getting ready to buy a new computer, and I'm hoping that will take care of some of the quirky problems I've had with the game. Including this one. :o)
IsharaMeradin Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Auto-move gets turned off by pressing the auto-move key again. Or you can press the forward or backward movement keys as that indicates that you are taking manual control back. Left and right keys are available for steering purposes in either auto or manual modes. Tho as we all know the steering isn't that great and requires more precision control with the mouse.
ruvuk Posted November 18, 2013 Author Posted November 18, 2013 @IsharaMeradin: Thank you. Really. I think sometimes that I'm not being careful about how I ask the questions that I post to the Skyrim Forums. And I know I must miss out on some good help because of that. I sometimes use more words than I need, and I understand that busy players don't have the time to read my too-long questions. But I often log on to the Forums when I'm tired and just want to get something asked before I sign off. Not a good plan, I know, but I'll try to get myself sorted pretty soon. :o) When I get some help in the Forums--good answers or not-so-good, friendly or flaming, all of it--it really gives me a shot in the arm. So thank you, you know?
IsharaMeradin Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 I totally understand. I have been in the same place before.
