GECK Vista Trouble

I asked around on the Bethesda Fallout 3 forums for help on this subject and got nothing helpful, but I figure at least one other person has to have had this problem.

I have Windows Vista SP1, and the retail version of Fallout 3. For the life of me I cannot get the GECK to function properly. The install goes fine, but my save files will not appear in Fallout 3's "Data" folder and do not show up on the launcher menu for plugins.

Can anybody offer any advice? I was told by someone else to save the GECK in a different location, but they did not elaborate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I also use Vista. Did the GECK install into your Fallout 3 folder? I have the GECK pinned to my start menu. Here's the location the shortcut reports:

"H:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3\GECK.exe"

If the GECK is in your Fallout 3 folder try running it directly from the folder location instead of the start menu link.

I am, I think the problem comes when I try to save plugins.

I noticed that if you try to create any new icons (folders, shortcuts, etc.) in Fallout 3's Data file (where GECK plugins are supposed to be saved) Vista's User Account Control interrupts you and asks for administrative permission to do this (I am running my PC as the admin). Do you think this might be the source of my problem? I'm thinking GECK attempts to save files here and the UAC blocks it.

If you think that's what might be causing the problem, do you have an suggestions as to how it might be remedied? Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

I have Vista with SP1 too.

If you have used patch 1.4 instead of the fake version you will not see your mod in the Launcher Data list, Unless you install FOMM you will not see your mod loaded in the Data folder so you can't even check it to activate it.

I even had the DLC Operaqtion Anchorage when it first came out and it did not appear in FOMM or the Launch Data list. But it is automatically set up, thanks to the authors of OA. All that is visible in the launcher DATA folder for me was Fallout3.esm.

All the mods I had installed and checked before they became invisible still worked. AFter I downloaded and installed the GFW LIVE software and after I patched with 1.4 they did not, and they no longer appeared in the Launcher link Data list.

I installed the FOMM that was available. The Fallout 3 Mod Manager I found after October 28, 2008. I found the FOMM releasae for Fallout 3 when I realized I could not check or uncheck mods that I had already downloaded and installed. I could see my mod in the FOMM but not in the Launch Data.

That is exactly the problem I am experiencing.

So the FOMM allowed you to use your GECK mods despite not having them appear in the Data folder? Could you link me to the FOMM you're using? That would be greatly appreciated.

Click here to learn a bit more about it from the GECK Wiki page. I linked the next click area so you can avoid all the unnecessary middle pages so you can get to the SourceForge area with the oldest to newest Fallout Mod Manager. Click here to get to that page.
