New and Ambitious

Hehe, I'm getting my laptop Wednesday and Oblivion along with it. I have the game for my Ps3 (so I know the basics, I beat it and whatnot) but it seems to me that mods can make the gaming experience so much more, which is what I've always craved for during my adventures. So, I'm going to start modding as soon as I get the game, but I'm so very confused on the whole subject... so if you could all spare a bit of patience and help me out, a thousand thanks couldn't justify my gratitude.

First

Welly well; obviously many mods have been around for a loooooong time. Looking at the 500 somethin' pages on TESnexus had me baffled. I'd love to go through each page, but that'd be extremely long, and when I want specific things, the search is there. For little things such as armor and whatnot, I've already picked out a few, but many questions remain.

What is Vanilla Oblivion? (I'm pretty sure I have an idea, but just making sure)

I'm just starting to use a computer for something else than the web and Word, so I know NOTHING, so please bare that in mind.

Do mods take a lot of space, and how many mods do most of you have at once?

(I had quite a few more questions but I can't remember any more at the moment =\)

Last

A HUGE favor that some of you kind gents could do for me, and would be IMMENSELY appreciated, would be naming me a few of the mods that you're using that makes gaming in the world of Oblivion so much better.

The are so many mods like body texture modifications, eyes... hairs, quests, maps... it's mind boggling and I can't handle it!! I have no clue where to start v_v

So if you could suggest some of the best mods out there to make Oblivion a better place, and in your opinion is a must, please tell me instead of having me scour TESNexus till my eyes bleed. ^^

What is Vanilla Oblivion?

It is an unmodified Oblivion

Search is your friend and not just on the file site but here in the forum as well. There are pinned threads on various boards and countless threads lost in the data piles that cover everything time and time again.

Welcome to the Nexus. Come on in the water is fine.

Vanilla just means the game with no mods of any kind. the game as it comes from Bethesda.

Playing with mods on a PC is quite a bit different than your PS3. With the PS3 you play what they want you to. With the PC you play as you want to.

Don't worry about not knowing anything about computers, in a short time you will know quite a bit - you have to learn to use the mods and learn a lot more to make your own. We can help.

Mods do take up room, but not a huge amount of space. and the maximum number is 256, but there are some ways around that number, such as combining mods.

Look at the top 100 mods, these are the most popular and cover most categories.

Thank you, sirs. ^_^

I'm sure that I'll have more to ask once I get my notebook on Wednesday! =D

I guess at this point a little reassurance is what I wanted =P For what though, I'm not sure, hehe.

Where can I find the top 100 mods?

On the front page of TESNexus look to the right side and you will see a menu with a bunch of links. Look under files and you will see "Top 100". It is between "Latest Files" and "Advanced Search".

Alrighty thank you very much.

Now; does anyone have any suggestions for me for a file or whatever that is equivalent to Winzip? That I could use for adding mods. I'm just starting to get into it, and it seems the first step is that, so if you have any legit suggestions that could save me 30 bucks, please do.

I'm with BossDweebe on this one - 7-Zip definitely. It's absolutely free, unlike winrar which is try before you buy. And its available here on the Nexus.

I have a set of help files for people new to mods. They include downloading, extracting (unzipping) installing and activating mods. I have included a sample mod to practice on and instructions for installing and using 7-zip. If you are interested, click on the highlighted link below to be taken to the site where they are kept. I recommend starting with #1 and working your way through them.
