katashy
thanks, i use GIMP and it's basically PS so can the plug-in work for GIMP as well?
Deepblue686
For GIMP try;http://nifelheim.dyndns.org/~cocidius/dds/Make sure your GIMP is fully up to date. Make sure you know how to install plugins (don't activate the .exe file in Winzip or whatever you use. Now, when you save, select the tiny "+" button next to the words "Select file type" and set it as .DDSWhen you save, you'll be given a pop-up.Select BC2/DXT3 as the compression and check the "Generate Mipmaps option. Now select "Advanced options" and select the lowest option in the list ("Lanczos") for the sharpest mipmaps. Then click save. The save options should stay as they are. katashy
gimp is a hassel,I know.... DxtBmp is a simple and free utiity that I use instead of gimp for making .dds from jpg I basically use gimp as everything, like re-touching and finishing any drawing i do, so i want to be able to save them as DDS so i only need one program. Though i will check this out.
LHammonds
The "DDS Tools Listing" page that SavageArtistry gave you is as complete of a listing as I know about for tools related to the DDS format and modding for Oblivion. The DDS Plugin for GIMP will allow you to save the image you have open in GIMP to DDS format but make sure you save the textures you are working with in the native format of your image editor. Opening a Jpeg, making changes and saving as a Jpeg will loose quality each time you save it because Jpeg is a lossy format...like sending a fax of a fax (each time gets worse and worse). DDS is also a lossy format so if you convert an image from DDS, make sure you save it in a loss-free format. Converting from a lossy format will mean that your new image will not be of the same quality as the original. You will also need to create Normal Maps if you do anything to a texture other than simple color hue changes. I prefer (and purchased) CrazyBump but you can also use a normalmap plugin for GIMP (free). Other tools can be found in the "DDS Tools Listing" page.
