SMAPI not working in Vortex

hello, my friend and I have downloaded some mods for Stardew Valley, one of which is SMAPI (of course!)

When I run SV through Vortex, it all works fine, but when my friend does it (bear in mind he has all the same mods downloaded as me) he gets an error:::

~ something to note is that he hasn't touched anything to do with the location of files or paths, and that neither of us know too much about paths and such - I know just enough to have managed to solved any Vortex errors for myself :) ~

executable:F:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley\StardewModdingAPI.exe

We've tried everything we can think of and at this point I'm all out of ideas and coming to the end of my mental rope.

I've been scouring the internet for a solution for over an hour, and still nothing - can someone please help?

If that is the entire message, then it looks like Vortex is warning your friend that you have asked it to launch an executable file rather than a mod file. That's the meaning of the .exe file type extension. I don't believe Vortex is designed to launch executable files. I have never tried to do that before with Vortex.

I am not familiar with Stardew Valley at all, but your friend may have to run the executable before using Vortex to manage mods for this game. VERIFY that is what the file is for BEFORE you try to run it. Check with the source of that file to understand its purpose. Was it downloaded from Nexus Mods?

Pickysaurus, that's the entire error - it comes up on a lil window inside Vortex when he tries to play Stardew Valley through Vortex, SMAPI.

jaydawg55, everything was downloaded from Nexus Mods. I'm not too sure how to launch the executable file rather than the mods file - is that running it from it's file location instead of through Vortex?

My friend has done the following, which has resulted in him being able to open SV through Vortex, but none of the mods appearing to work:

~ settings > Mods > Deployment Method > switched from Hardlink to Symlink

~ uninstall and removed SMAPI from Vortex > replace with SMAPI Strict

After he installed (we think, though can't remember) SMAPI normal again, it downloaded and then disappeared from his Vortex Mods list. NOTE: He hasn't got it back since.

Then we disabled all the mods, not including SMAPI as it's disappeared from the list.

My friend tried running the game again through Vortex, and got two alerts:

1. Failed to run tool

2. Deployment Failed:

1 files were not correctly deployed (see log for details).

The most likely reason is that files were locked by external applications so please

ensure no other application has a mod file open, then repeat deployment.

From what I know, he didn't have anything open apart from Vortex and Steam, so we're not too sure what the "external applications" could be, unless it was Steam or Vortex???

He tried redownloading the normal SMAPI, and in the Downloads of Vortex, it stayed there for ages, "pending".

All he did was follow Nexus and Vortex download links - exactly what I did, so it could be something on his PC?

He has just reset his PC, booted it all up again, and when he opened Vortex, it told him SMAPI is not installed.

Following the link provided for him, my friend redownloaded it, and it's been "installing" into Vortex for the past 10-15 minutes.

Now it's still "installing" but there's loads of errors.

He's just found 3 SMAPI's in his Mods, and has messed around with the "enable" until he managed to have just one enabled.

None of the mods are enabled, and he tried running SV through Vortex, and it worked!!

So we've tried adding one small mod, and it worked.

Then he enabled all his mods and it couldn't load. So we have SMAPI working, and we just need to find whatever mod/s is causing it to not run at all, if that's the issue.

in case it's the mods themselves, we've got the following:

NOTE: We also wanted Better Ranching, but when my friend disabled it, SV loaded and the Experience Bars mod (which was the only enabled one, apart from SMAPI) was working. But when he enabled all the others, the game didn't load at all.

~ SMAPI

~ Experience Bars

~ Ridgeside Village (required mods for this are all below)

~ AntiSocial NPCs

~ Content Patcher

~ Custom Companions

~ Custom NPC Exclusions

~ Extra Map Layers

~ Farm Type Manager (FTM)

~ Json Assets

~ Mail Framework Mod

~ SAAT - Audio API and Toolkit

~ Shop Tile Framework

~ Show Birthdays
