Steps to take to make a clean mod setup that can be preserved?

I have modded Skyrim before but I always curse myself for not preserving my mod setups so I have to start over from scratch every time. I spend months polishing my mod list to make the perfect one for me in how I want the game to look and behave but then now again I have to start over again. I would love to just come back and have that nice base I have made and then be able to add or adjust to it with new mods that might have appeared when I was gone instead of starting over from zero again.

Last time I modded a game was with Morrowind and I tried tried to be more organized.

My question is really what steps I can take as I start to mod Skryim again to be able to preserve my modded game so I can transfer it to another computer or continue on it in the future without having to start over from scratch? Would it just be a case of doing a complete backup of my Skyrim install folder and all mod folders? Is there actually any article or video about this anywhere out there?

Also I used ModOrganizer when I modded Morrowind. Can I use this also for Skyrim or is it recommended to use another mod program?
