Quick question about current the current state of Skyrim

Greets, I took a year of two long break from modding this game, mostly due to AE being released at the time, but now I decided it would be a good time to return.

I wanted to know if the community is still split between those who make mods for 1.5.97/pre-AE or has everyone/most switched over to AE modding already.

Thanks in advance

I think there is still a split between those that wish to use pre-AE SE and those that want to use post-AE SE. As far as making mods go, I cannot say with any certainty.

That said, any post-AE SE mod that does not use AE content, does not rely on an SKSE DLL and does not use an post-AE papyrus functions will still work on a pre-AE SE install. And on the flip side, any pre-AE SE mod that does not rely on an SKSE DLL and doesn't conflict with any AE content will still work on a post-AE SE install.

I started a new SE game about a month ago including reloading all my favorite mods without issue.

No conflicts or crashes.

I really still have a case against AE after all the problems it caused, so I am pretty sure I’ll never use it.

On a side note, I did try the fishing they included with the update, LAME!

I was hoping it’d be a little more immersive like the fishing is in the Far Cry series.

I'm on 1.5.97 and never tried 1.6x.

Curious, how does it work?

Idk if you ever played FFXI, but fishing there was interesting. You had to "finesse" the bow with the action keys (actively "fish"), or if you got one on the hook (but not "Caught" yet, chance losing the fish, or worse breaking the bow. Oh, and bows weren't weapons, and there were different types of bows for different types of fish.

It was ~challenging.

Considering the fishing addon is just another mod made by just another mod author, they did a pretty decent job with the tools at hand. The only difference between the Creation Club content rolled into SE or included in the AE 'upgrade' is that Bethesda gave their seal of approval and had it up for sale rather than for free. Would I have installed it if it were available here on the Nexus? Probably not. I have given it a shot, however, and it beats swimming in the water trying to pluck fish.

The fishing added to Skyrim is more like the fishing in The Elder Scrolls Online. There are designated 'fishing holes' that need to be discovered. Once discovered, a map pin is added and they can be fast traveled to. One needs to actually equip a fishing rod which counts as a weapon and can be used as such in a pinch (though the damage is pitiful). Once the rod is equipped the player interacts with a bucket of 'fishing supplies'. The player is forced into first person with a fishing rod already cast. If there are splashes of water, there are fish to catch. No splashes and random junk including the occasional weapon or armor piece gets hauled in instead. The line will be pulled on a few times and eventually the rod will be pulled up, at this point one needs to press the activation button to 'reel' in the fish. Reel in too early, the catch is lost. Forget to reel in, the catch is lost. When using a controller, it also vibrates when the line is being tugged and the rod pulling up.
