Quaternium
Hello everyone I recently had to reformat my computer because of a system error and i am running on Windows XP SP3. Fallout 3 worked fine preformat but post format the launcher doesn't run and gives the following error. Falloutlauncher.exe "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem" (It doesn't, clearly) Fallout.exe doesn't work either, clicking on it does absolutely nothing not even an error message. Tried fallout mod manager, same result I have tried multiple combos of different patches, exes, dvd, iso, with and without addons (only the pitt and operation: Anchorage) with no success at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Shakor
I have recently been having the same issue, though maybe brought on by more complicated problems. I had also downloaded 1.5 patch but the fallout3.exe worked for a short time until I tried to reinstall the game when it does exactly what you described.http://thenexusforums.com/index.php?showtopic=129158
Quaternium
It occurred to me that for whatever reason the fallout.exe didn't write a config file for the My Games folder so i decided to take my old config files from my hard drive backup and put them where they are supposed to be and it worked. Now i have no idea what is blocking the exe from creating config files but it still appears to be unable to edit them. The exe starts up fine but the game is unplayable, graphics are messed up but at least getting it running is a start. edit: after an update to 1.5 and a computer restart the game is working fine, operation anchorage is loading fine and no problems yet
acebad
I had the same problem on a Windows XP SP2 system. Bought the GOTY edition, and as soon as I try to autorun the DVD, I got the error "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect." I ended up looking on the DVD and executing the setup.exe directly to install the game, but even after installation, I couldn't launch the game via fallout3.exe. I ended up resolving the issue by installing .NET framework version 3.5 (the Fallout DVD tries to install version 3.0). I got the install from Microsoft's website here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en But before I could run that install file, I also had to download Windows Installer 3.1: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...38-de776fd4138c After the 3.5 .NET framework was installed, FalloutLauncher.exe started successfully and I was able to run the game. Hope this info helps anyone else that runs into the same problem.
evilneko
Interesting. I ran into a similar problem when trying to play over at my friend's house, and my resolution was quite different. So it's obviously a generic message that covers multiple errors. I had swapped out the video card in his computer and copied the entire \data directory from my laptop to his computer, and that's when the error started showing up. I didn't have the disc with me, so I couldn't actually launch from the launcher, but it would at least give me that error message. I tried running the 1.6 patch, that didn't fix it. I tried copying the entire Fallout installation over, and that didn't work either. I searched the registry, figuring maybe something was screwed up there, and found nothing. Finally, I opened up the Fallout.ini file and changed the references to his old video card so they referenced the new one, and deleted the RendererInfo.txt. The game worked, but was a bit glitchy, would occasionally freeze for a few seconds. It was somewhat playable. Gotta remember to take my disc next time I go over there so I can configure the game properly.
SuchFalloutVeryRads
Finally, I opened up the Fallout.ini file and changed the references to his old video card so they referenced the new one, and deleted the RendererInfo.txt.OMG Thank you based god! I couldn't figure what the f*#@ was causing fallout3.exe to do nothing (it would show in taskmanager for 1 second and vanish with no error) changed the line to reference my new GPU. THANK YOU BASED GOD!To be more specific the file is My Games\Fallout3\FalloutPrefs.ini and the line is sD3DDevice="AMD Radeon R9 200 Series" Or whatever your GPU series is.
