A question from a complete noob on working with mods.

Hi. I am completely new to mods and stuff. I install and hope for the best and try to follow the instructions about load order. So far so good. I have over 70 mods installed and run with no problems.

I read about BOSS and decided to give it a go. So I ran it and ended up with 15 warnings, but, 7 are on inactive mods. Basically better sorting puts this notice on all the different options because you aren't supposed to have more than one of the same type (food, gems and so on). So once you have run it and made your choices the other choices are installed but not active. So those 7 can basically be ignored is my understanding.

The other 8 are on mods that add new buildings and are all deleted navmesh. I am not sure if I need to fix those or if I can leave them alone, but as the game seems to be working I am thinking they are okay? I mean if a new building is added then some things in the game had to have been changed or deleted right? So that is the first question, do I leave them alone or try to fix them with the TES5edit that BOSS suggests? Again that would be a totally new experience for me and wouldn't have any clue what I was doing and would be following some guide that BOSS has a link to.

And finally there are a bunch of other mods that have no errors or anything on them but there are also a few that have no warning but do say Contains dirty edits Needs TES5edit cleaning. A cleaning guide is available here. Again is this something I should attempt or should I leave well enough alone?

Also would posting my BOSS log be helpful in any way? I didn't want to post it if it was not allowed here or if it wouldn't really be useful to anyone. I am not adverse to trying the TES5edit.....but.....the game seems to run fine as it is and so wonder if I should push my luck.

When you have mod issues, BOSS logs should pretty much always be posted. They give a lot more information than simple mod lists/load orders or papyrus logs.

Clean the mods it says have dirty edits. This includes the .esms. Given the page BOSS links is something like 20 pages long if you were to copy/paste it into Word (guestimation!), here's my super-condensed 'how to clean mods' guide:

1. Open TES5Edit.

2. A window will pop up with all your mods checked. Right-click this window, and click on 'Select None'.

3. Check only the mod you want to clean and click OK/doubleclick on the mod you want to clean. It's masters will automatically be loaded.

4. Wait for everything to load.

5. On the left, right-click the mod and click on 'Apply Filter for Cleaning'. Wait.

6. Right-click the mod again and click on 'Remove "Identical to Master" Records'. Wait.

7. Right-click on the mod again and select 'Undelete and Disable References'. Wait.

8. Close TES5Edit. Save the file when it prompts to.

9. Repeat for each mod that needs cleaning.

As for the ones with NavMesh issues...it's up to you. I had a few mods a while back with Navmesh problems that just added to my game instability, so I just removed them (mods weren't very good anyway, so no loss =)), but if you're not having any issues, you can either leave them alone, or try to repair them. Just know that some mods can't be fixed.

My initial reaction was if it is working now, then don't mess with it.

I figured the navmesh things were because of added buildings or deleted terrain to add new buildings and terrains, so the 8 mods that gave me the navmesh warnings I thought probably weren't important.

The dirty edits I might try and fix (thanks for the condensed guide it is pretty concise).
