Friend or Foe - Know BEFORE you shoot

Hello. I did some searching around on nexus and, well, google in general for a mod that allows you to know whether someone is a friendly or hostile target BEFORE you try to attack. I wasn't able to find one that suited my tastes, but please let me know if you have a recommendation.

Let me start by saying I'm aware that there are spells (i.e. detect life) and shouts

I am also aware that there are work-around for this, such as firing an arrow near or at the npc and then gauging reaction, or using a spell that accomplishes the same.

That's all well and good provided you are an archer (or carry a long-ranged weapon only for this purpose) or a spellcaster. But isn't the mod community, and modding in general, about making options for all? So I say have at it.

I am requesting a mod that allows for identifying friendly from hostile targets without having to empty your hand or change spells/abilities to do so. I'm no modder, but in my head this takes one of two forms...

- When you place your cursor over a target (either normally, or if preferred maybe only with a weapon/bow drawn, or spell readied) it identifies if the target is friendly. It could be with the word "friendly", or whatever.

- They simply show up as red before you attack or trigger them. This could be a different shape or icon on your compas, or they could just always appear as those red "hostile" dots provided you have targeted them (they stand where your crosshair would be).

Those are just some ideas. But all in all I'm so tired of coming across an NPC only to then have to worry if a simple arrow to knee will endanger me (failed quest or bounty) or a beloved character. Figuring it out as things stand now is a pain in the ass.

Is anyone with me?

I don't get it.

If they are hostile, they will be a red dot on the compass HUD and they will attack you.

Any NPC will turn hostile if you try to murder them for no reason. Most NPCs will give a warning if you get too close and they don't like the idea. Hunters etc will not.

What you are talking about is knowing if they are a bandit or an innocent hunter before you try to murder them for absolutely no reason at all; and then not pay the price when you get it wrong.

I suggest you role-play and talk to them, as you would if you were actually the Dovahkiin and came across someone in the wilderness and did not know who they were or what their intentions were. The game already does this for you and it can be quite fun and exciting. If they say "That's far enough!", you'll know they are unfriendly. Just like when Imperials "say "Citizen! You are interfering with official Imperial business!" Or the Thalmor give a similar unfriendly greeting.

Most NPCs and animals have a Warn radius that is larger than their Attack radius.

Alternatively, my Sun, Moon and Star mod has a spell that tells you all their abilities, including their Class, which gives a reasonable indication of their aggression and demeanour.

  • 6 months later...

well i do understand all of your view points but dont forget some mods change cloth/weapon/armor on all ...so who knows friends from foes...but i think he want a identification from cursor only saying whatwho he is, game give it anyway if they in battle with other enemys...special some mage factions is quite odd all hate you but they allso engage each other...and whats the point in alert them if u are a sneak type but not sure on target is a enemy, and dont forget there are rescue encount if you are quick enough before they kill target...
