exanimis
That's kind of like asking what the secret of life is. There are tons of tips, tricks and advice you will need to lean. If it's a large world you might want to make your file a master file before generating terrain, that way you can make changes without messing up your world. You can generate terrain and if it's not what you want, you will be able to change it without making changes to you master file. Don't generate your pathgrid until your terrain has been generated. Path nodes will generate around trees. rocks and buildings, they can be changed later if you need to add something else. When you generate terrain, the edges don't always match up. You will need to go into the CS and paint some areas so that they match. Sometime when you try to paint over an area, the area refuses to change. The CS limits the amount of terrains allowed in each cell. You can open the terrain editor and hit Ctrl + right click on a terrain that is already in the cell, that copies the terrain and allows you to paint the area with what is already in the cell. The best advice that I can offer is to create a small area and then experiment with everything. Learn what the settings do and what they change. There are many things that can be changed but few people ever try them. You have a huge amount of freedom for change with the CS. Changing the terrain is just the beginning. You can change the lighting, weather, water type, both day and night sky and many more things. Hope some of that helps. Good luck.
