Why the bloody hell can't I get this game to be stable?

I recently had to replace my SSHD drive, I replaced it with an SSD and installed Ubuntu on it. Before I was running Windows 10. When I had windows, nothing I did rendered either version of the game playable. Yeah, I could turn it on and start a game, but the crashes/freezes were too excessive. In SE, I had guaranteed crashes in several locations that made it literally impossible to play the game. No fix I installed solved the problem, and even running completely without mods didn't help either. LE was better, but even that suffered from the problems. In particular, I was having an issue with crashes increasing in frequency the longer the game went on.

Playing LE on my new OS, things have been going better. I've only had two freezes, the latter of which MY GAME RECOVERED FROM. WHOEVER HEARD OF THAT EVER HAPPENING??? However, just today I tried to play the game, only to get a crash a minute or two after starting. Hours later, I tried again, I got further but still crashed again. Keep in mind, I have yet to install a single mod. In fact, I literally haven't gotten around to getting mod organizer working, so I couldn't install a single mod even if I wanted to.

New OS, no mods, same damned problem. Wtf? Do my computers just hate the game? I have NEVER once had issues like this with a game; this same machine was able to run Shadow of Mordor without issue. When I first got this game on my windows 7 machine over a decade ago, I had three crashes on the first day. I played it anyway, though the crashes always annoyed me.

What the hell is wrong with my computers? Why can I not run this specific game in any version on any OS? Is my graphics card to blame? It only has 2gb of vram, which is below that 4gb of ram LE can handle (no idea if that limit applies to vram or not). Could my processor be at fault? I've long suspected that something must be wrong with my computer. Why do enbs exist that I cannot run when I exceed the system requirements for the game? If my computer can't run them, then none should be able to. Clearly something's not right. Maybe its that my hardware actually isn't compatible? Systemrequirementslab told me I do meet the system requirements by leaps and bounds. However, I have a pitiful amount of vram. Could that be the issue? The only explanation left for my problems is that Skyrim is simply too unstable to play for more than about 10 levels, or there is something wrong with my hardware. Installing the SSD did reduce load times considerably, but that's it.

I've been thinking about getting a new graphics card so I can upgrade the graphics for my game for youtube. However, I'm really badly strapped for cash; I've having to conserve gas now, and changing the brands I buy to try and save money. I wasn't happy about paying $150 for this SSD, but I had no choice in the matter. A new graphics card would be twice that at minimum, and this game would be the only program I have that could possibly benefit from it. Why should I invest $300+ into a single game? Yeah, its not going to bethesda (to hell with them), but its still a lot of money.

I don't even know why I'm asking this to be honest; I've asked this countless times all over the internet and haven't RECEIVED A SINGLE REPLY. Besides, lets be real here, this board is ruled by trolls and I can only name ONE INDIVIDUAL who hasn't just ridiculed and harrassed me and spread false information. Sorry, I'm just frustrated getting my new comptuer to work, and its no fun that Skyrim refuses to work no matter how much I bend over backwords for it. No fix helps other than New Vegas Anti Crash. Of course, I suspect now that mod simply traded in my crashes for freezes (I was mainly using it to fix a grid transition crash, which there's now a mod dedicated for). I don't see myself playing this game in its state; I quit playing the game for months before my SSHD died, BECAUSE I GOT SICK OF SIMPLY GETTING THIS GAME TO FUNCTION. I mean, how are you supposed to play this game when you can't progress past level 10? Yeah, at least I can enter dragonsreach without crashing, but that doesn't really help much. The game is in an unplayable state, and I can seemingly do nothing to fix it. I would just move on to a different game, but I literally have none. Every other game I've loved has been destroyed by updates. Skyrim LE is literally the only game I own that I enjoy, and I cannot acquire another in any shape or form. I was going to develop my own games, but Ubuntu apparently REFUSES TO RUN PYTHON PROGRAMS EXCEPT THROUGH THE IDE'S BUILT-IN TESTER. Wtf? Games I have made in python NOW NO LONGER WORK. So much for python. If I want to run a python program now, I need to do it on my laptop. When that thing fries, I'll never again have a way to run them. I hate digital tech. The only reason I bother with computers anymore is BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE NO INCOME IF I DID NOT. YOU CANNOT EVEN GET A JOB AT f*#@ING MCDONALDS WITHOUT INTERNET ACCESS WHAT THE f*#@ING HELL.

The game does have its issues, yet I wouldn't call it unplayable.  I have played LE on multiple devices ranging from laptops that were below spec to a desktop that exceeds specs.  The game would still crash after a certain amount of time, the more mods added, the less time before a crash.  SSE still has all that albeit the duration of time before something happens is greater.  I am plagued by the occasional black box covering a portion of the screen after going through load doors, but saving and reloading resolves that.

The more I read posts from you, the more I suspect that there is either a hardware or software issue on your end that is preventing the game from playing as it should.  Do you have any programs running in the background that could be eating away at system resources?  If you do, try turning them off.  I have no experience with Linux and cannot help with that.  All I can really say is good luck and hope you get things figured out.

I should not, no. Keep in mind all I've installed on this computer so far is steam, skyrim, factorio, and some emulation tools to fix an audio issue I was having that later turned out to just be an issue with my sound settings. This was weeks ago, and this issue only now appeared today despite me playing this character for days now. These crashes also started literal moments after I turned my computer on (with an SSD and virtually nothing installed, it literally just takes seconds to boot up).

What can I do to fix the issue if its hardware? Will upgrading my graphics card fix things? I already have far more ram than LE can use (I think its 8gb or something like that). My processor is also no longer in production, though it well exceeds the system requirements for the game. Not so sure about my new SSD though; the guy at staples (who does actually know stuff btw), asked me what processor was in the thing when I got the SSD but I did not know since it came with the computer. I'm still not sure what it is, other than its an intel i5.

It is a shame that you still cannot solve the problems that this great game brings you, and that here in this community where so many people with so much knowledge are gathered, sharing their help and their work creating modifications that are free if you do not want to contribute with some compensation towards they.
But they are still there. even those who are always helping others, and who do it for free and for the simple fact of helping. like in the old times.
Even they cannot find a solution to the different problems you have.

A community created by players for players who share a single purpose, having fun and helping others have fun creating great mods, creating great ideas and making the world of gamers a shorter and closer path so that we can be united and together.

I think you should also try to get support from these guys: Bethesda Support

https://help.bethesda.net/#en/home

Since they are the ones who sold you the game and it is where they are going to give you the necessary support since that is where you paid for this great game.

Probably the base game is not working on your PC, perhaps it would be advisable to fix the base game and ensure that your PC has all the minimum necessary requirements and then you can just put mods on it. Maybe there's something in the game you bought that might be glitching and that's all that causes a series of chain events that causes your game to crash so badly.

I would like to have a little more knowledge and be able to help you personally but unfortunately I don't have it so for now I am going to avoid opening any other post that you are going to write since it is always recurring about problems.
I hope you solve it and they help you at Bethesda Support or here in this great community (supportive and full of kind people who do it for free)

Have a great new year and to everyone in the community and by the way,

thank all those who have helped me at some

point with a questions or problems that I personally have had.

🎅 🥳🥳

You really think Bethesda (to hell with them) would be willing to help me? If I asked, they would probably just tell me to play s#*! Edition and completely abandoning modding and instead stick to their worthless CC garbage, and then insist that would solve all my problems, and if I reported it did not they would just accuse me of lying. Besides, even if I did try to speak to them, I don't see anyway I wouldn't give them a piece of my mind. I would tell them 'I'm playing LE is because I despise dealing with your attempts to stop people from modding s#*! Edition, and it always ran better on my computer even when I had windows on here', blah blah blah.

Running the game through an emulator does help considerably, though its still far from perfect. The only thing left for me to try is to replace the hardware. I already replaced the drive, so that didn't do much (other than decreasing my load times as I already mentioned). I'm already running far more ram than this thing needs too. The only things I could replace that I would imagine would make a difference is the graphics card and processor. What, is my sound card to blame? I don't think I even have one; I think my graphics card comes built in with one, though right now I'm actually using the audio from my monitor. Either way, I couldn't possibly afford to replace anything in my computer right now. I'll just have to wait to see if I can start turning a profit again before I consider buying anything else. Besides, who knows if it would even work? All my other games run fine, so it would seem a bit silly to sink hundreds of dollars into one game.

When I started using mods I had frequent crashes.  It got back to a reasonable level after adding a number of optimizations and anti-crash mods.  I now consider these essential:

  • Optimized Dawnguard textures
  • Optimized Dragonborn textures
  • Optimized Hearthfire textures
  • Optimized Vanilla textures
  • Bethesda Performance Textures - Armor - Clothes - Weapons (and associated patches)
  • Unofficial High Resolution Patch
  • Unofficial Skyrim City Patch
  • Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition Patch
  • Whiterun texture memory usage reduction
  • Skyrim Project Optimization
  • Crash Fixes
  • Bug Fixes
  • Load Game CTD fix
  • New Vegas Anti Crash

Of late, I have taken to using "Cathedral Asset Optimizer" to cap texture resolutions to 2K.  It makes an obvious difference!

I am still getting occasional crashes, but now virtually all crashes are probabilistic in nature.  I can reload from a save game that is seconds from crashing, and make it through (after a couple of retries sometimes).  They seem to happen mostly on cell boundaries, when a lot of things trigger at the same time, a lot of new assets get loaded in a hurry and the frame rate drops below 2 fps.

With only 2gb of vram, you may have to be even more aggressive in optimizing textures.

I was already running most of those, minus the the 'optimized' textures and this 'city patch', which I've never heard of (though I was running Better Bethesda Performance Textures, mainly though that was because they were the only vanilla armor retextures I could find that didn't change the aesthetic like Book of Silence does). I was running Better Bethesda Performance Textures, the unofficial patch, crash fixes, bug fixes, load game ctd fix, and new vegas anti crash, which I've already said appears to be the only mod that really made a difference.

I guess then the issue is in fact my vram and to make this stop I need to get a better graphics card?
