STEAM & BETHESDA - Forced Update

Okay, so I was told a few years back to turn *OFF* - updates in my Steam Setup Account.

... I did and I checked it, every other month or so ...... IT WAS OFF.

And yet - I was FORCED UPDATE with Skyrim last year. I still have not reloaded the game, as the UPDATE totally trashed the current game I was playing. Even the UPDATE screwed up my game!

So once again, I verified my Auto-Update with Steam was * O F F * and yes it was / is.

So I was in the hospital for a few tests came home today, to start playing FO4 only to find it's totally screwed up and yes, they FORCED updated FO 4 when I had it TURNED OFF!

What the hell is going on?????

Lucky there are mods here on nexus, that you can use to rollback to previous version.

And then another mod to lock down your game so it wont be updated again.

As for me I also turned on "update only when I start game" which is the closest thing to "turn down updates" on steam and then only started my games via F4SE.exe

On top of that I changed my .acf file (the version file) to read-only.

Steam is known to completely ignore that setting a lot of the time, it's caught a lot of people out before.

Turning just 1 file to read-only would have prevented that. (the appmanifest_#insert version number#.acf inside steamapps folder) Not even if you actually hit the update button!

My steam did not update the game, as it simply couldn't. However, instead of the 'play' button, it just showed the 'update' button. (within steam, so launching the game by icon was no issue)

I guess - we know that Steam LIES - with the DO  NOT UPDATE BUTTON.

So okay, a serious Trust Issue is growing, as I am not the only ....

I tried finding those MODS .. guess I will have to search harder.

If you happen to know the links, I would appreciate it .. 🙂

Thanks .. the READ ONLY, is a problem, in that I tried that and when I went to install new mods and such .. it created a problem of having to go through the process - to allow access.

This is the reason I switched to GOG for Skyrim and Fallout 4 (and a couple other games) years ago.

No DRM, no mess.    It will update when I want it to update - and no earlier.

GOG hasn't published the update yet - because like Fallout:London they didn't get it until everyone else got it.

Got to be honest here, nothing Bethesda has released since Fallout 4 (which has been a decade now) has even come anywhere close to moving the needle of interest.

Sadly, I have to agree ... Even FALLOUT 4 was the warning sign, that Bethesda had lost the ability to tell stories at all and RPG.

Fallout 76, Starfield and such have proven that point, beyond any debate. Yes, Bethesda is trying to "fix" it ... but all they are doing is proving they lost the Story telling and can only apply bandages to make it 'look good', but totally empty of any real substance.

You are only supposed to change the app manifest file to read only not the entire Fallout 4 folder.

Bethesda isn't trying to fix anything.    They are just copy/paste and give it some eyecandy.

Sad thing is they have literally taken an entire chapter from the EA book with their Madden game.

The only difference is EA solicits "donations" in the Billions.
