AudrieD
I know everyone loves their Discords but Discord is a lousy place for a forum. It is invisible to search engines so you have to dig through individual servers to find what you need. Maybe it's convenient for you but it's not convenient to anyone else to follow a couple hundred servers instead of a single site because everyone has to have one. How is it harder to read posts here than to read posts there? Github is just as bad but at least it is indexed. See point #1. Why even have websites like this if everything is done on Discord except hosting your files for free? It's your world. You do you. Just know that this arrangement is not ideal for everyone. It actually sucks. I can't really name anyone I have ever talked to saying, "Oh! I get to join another Discord! I'm so excited!"
zixi
I couldn't get on with it. I sort of signed up when there was going to be discussion about something on Nexus... the new app for mods? Anyway, I wanted to help out. I went there once and it reminded me of those clubs when I was a teenager and there was live music and everyone shouted at once so you came away with a headache, hearing loss and you hadn't the faintest idea as to what anyone had said. And you couldn't hear the band... As you say, the people there seem to love it but it isn't for me. However, having sort of signed up, quitting was extraordinarily difficult. I'm still not certain I've totally achieved exit... Github seems more focused but its interface isn't easy for anyone new there... I've stopped joining in when joining in means joining something else. There's something bizarre about it. It's like wanting to buy a book but first you have to buy something from the local florist... That's an apt analogy. I've been on only a couple of times and didn't like it. It was way too busy, actually worse than those old chat rooms where you make a comment and it immediately flies off the screen unseen by anyone because about 5000 people are responding at the same time. And plus, some of the folks there seemed pretentious and full of themselves. So, I won't be going back anytime soon. @AudrieD Nice avatar, by the way. AaronOfMpls
I'm active in a few quiet and quiet-ish Discords where I have some friends and acquaintances from elsewhere online. I even run a couple myself for some roleplay friends in Second Life, so we can connect out-of-world when we need to. And I'm inactive in a few busier Discords where I've muted all but an Updates channel. These mostly relate to some other games and/or their mods. But yah, it's definitely got its plusses and minuses. That would have been useful if I had known then because there is a wealth of information to be gleaned from the postings and from other modders in general... but damn it's busy and crowded. I did have one good experience with one of the modders back when I was giving Starwind a try. He guided me through a situation where the quest line wouldn't advance because one of the NPCs was stuck in a wall and had to reach a certain point for the next stage to trigger. So I seem to remember him, the modder, giving me the console ID to advance the quest line... or something similar, I forget. Yah, right-click/long-press on them in your list -- either on an entire Discord, or the (sub)channels within it. You can mute for several different durations, set different notification settings (notify on: everything, only @mentions, nothing; whether or not to include @everyone mentions; etc), and more. Discord pops up tips about this stuff when loading, and there's a big online manual of all this on their website too. And sometimes when a normally quiet Discord gets busier than I'd like, I'll mute it for 15 minutes or an hour, and catch up on it later. The web can seem like that though. I wonder if it's because the nuances of actual speech and the other cues are missing - so a lot of people who are really charming and self effacing come over as quite the opposite. We realised early on with electronic communication that there was an issue and the smileys were supposed to help with that. It's odd though. Do people come over as pretentious in letters as well? We didn't have need of smileys there. Maybe we were more expansive in letters... I do sympathise. I've come across a number of people I'd like to stand on the naughty step till they developed some empathy and some sense... I suspect they'd be there for some time. But I bet I annoy them too... Anyway, Discord didn't work for me - it was too Me! Me! Me! But I'm glad that other people like it. Ditto those other places I don't like much... If the Web was built just to please me, it'd be very quiet and reflective... And there would be zero adverts... @AudrieD I'm glad AI has done something to make someone happy. It was an area I was in briefly, right at the start. The pinnacle then was whether AI could beat the world chess master... I went in a different direction because I didn't then like some of the ways it was going...Now I worry that it's Skynet...
