No Bounty Reward for Ancient's Ascent?

I was at the Jarl of Falkreath's Long House and spoke to his Steward about work and she gave me the quest to kill the Dragon at Ancient's Ascent and gave me the Bounty notice.

I had the quest in my journal, went there and did it, but did not read the Bounty Notice until after killing the dragon.

Now, there is no completed quest to turn in and no one has anything to say about it.

I don't recall this sort of thing ever happening before, but is it a known thing that if you do not read the Bounty notice the quest gets no Bounty reward, or even any acknowledgement, even though it's in your journal?

Cheers!

Console:   sqv bq04

See what it says.
Reading the letter is NOT a requirement for quest completion.   There is no stage for reading it, and no script attached to the letter alias.

The quest obtains a location, and populates the Bounty alias with a Boss RefType from the location(dragon).   In case of this quest, that alias should be 0005FC0F.   A script attached to the boss dragon should advance the quest to stage 100 on its death.    The quest objective marker is only set if that dragon is not dead.   If you still have the objective to kill but no marker, potentially something went wrong with the OnDeath script

If anything, you can advance it yourself via:    setstage bq04 100

The quest was removed from my Journal when I killed the dragon, but I got no stage to report back to the Falkreath Court and no one acknowledges that I fulfilled the bounty.

Cheers.

What did 'sqv bq04' say?

Loads of things. Getting the quest from the Innkeeper and so on. Is there a way to output it all to a text file?

At the end it says

Enabled? Yes
State: Running
Current Stage: 10
Priority: 30

Most of the aliases were 000CBA9A. I couldn't see one with 0005FC0F.

Does this help?

For LE, there is ConScrybe

000CBA9A  is the FormID of the BQ04 quest itself.  It looks like you were looking at the wrong section of sqv output.

In the Papyrus section, there is a bunch of lines like  ::Alias_Letter_var = alias Letter on quest BQ04 (000CBA9A)  - those are not what you need.

But right  before quest state part in the end, there should be a list of actual Aliases, i.e.:
REF 'Letter' -> '' (FF0010B0)

You are looking for line starting with: REF 'Bounty'.

In any case, stage 10 means the game thinks you did not kill the target yet.    Sometimes the boss dragon of the dragon mound  might fly off to give chase to something.    So maybe you killed some random dragon that happened to be in the vicinity of the mound, and not the actual boss.    That said, You should have the quest marker for the dragom still.
Regardless - you got following options:     First is 'setstage bq04 100'   - this will present you with objective to go claim your reward.

Another is trying to kill that dragon again.    To expedite, you can:
coc dragonlair02exterior01   - which should place you right at the steps leading to Ancient's Ascent.   If dragon is not there, try waiting a few hours (like 12)

Well, the quest was removed from my Journal, so I Killed the Dragon at Ancient's Ascent. I could go back there, though, and see what happens. I have plenty of food, firewood and a big tent!

Thanks for that link, I'll try it out.

Cheers.

OK, I got this:

It doesn't have 0005FC0F or FF0010B0.

Have I confused the Hold, the Jarl and the quest giver?  🫢

I was building at Lakeview, then as I had the quest to kill the Vampire for the deposed Jarl and the Dragon quest for the new Jarl, I went to Ancient's Assault as it was en route to Bloodlet Throne. I hadn't done anything in Riften, I only went there to steal the Alchemy book from the Alchemist that let's me learn a bunch of recipes in my Alchemy mod. I didn't talk to anyone else.

In any case, even if I accidentally picked up the dragon quest in Riften, I killed the dragon but it has not completed. It was in my Journal, I killed it, it's gone from my journal, but the log says it's still active.

So I went to my own mod player home at Riverwood to jump junk, sell stuff off and then walked around the mountains to get to Ivarstead so I can go meet the Greybeards. I just reached it and played some Bard songs at the Inn.

Some of those aliases seem to be to do with Riften, a BYOH place called Honeymead and a few other things unrelated to Falkreath.

Cheers.

Well, in my Riverwood Home mod I have a cupboard where I keep all quest-related papers, notes, journals and so on when they are done.

I have five Bounty notices, two of which I've completed.

Kill the Dragon at Ancient's Ascent, Jarl Siddgeir, Falkreath, signed Nenya (done)
Kill the Dragon at Northwind Summit, Laila Lawgiver, The Rift, signed Anuriel
Kill the Forsworn at Red Eagle Redoubt, Igmund, The Reach, signed Raerek
Kill the Bandits at Fort Fellhammer, Korir, Winterhold, signed Malur Seloth
Kill the Bandits at Snowpoint Beacon, Korir, Winterhold, signed  Malur Seloth (done)

The last two are very useful as my Silver and Mithril smithing mod has two quests which put the Ancient Art of Silver Weapon Smithing book at Snowpoint Beacon and the Legendary Mithril one is at Alftand, and Fort Fellhammer is sort of en route. The nearby Tower was also converted to a player home by my friend who used to make superb House mods, so it's a source of various goodies and a safe place to rest. I did the Ancient Silver Smithing quest a while ago so my companions and I have decent Silver scimitars and bows, so the Revenant Wraith thing I put there to guard the Mithril manuscript should be killable at level 27 (he actually wrote it but was killed just as he found an ingot of Mithril). Legendary Mithril does even more bonus damage against undead and lycanthropes than Ancient Silver! I never bother with Glass or better weapons as smithing Mithril up to Legendary works for everything.

But I digress.

Anyway, I had two Dragon Bounty quests active at the same time and it looks like sqv bq04 is reporting the status of the other one I haven't done yet, in The Rift. Why this should stop me being able to turn the quest in for the reward at Falkreath is a mystery, but the console seems to have nothing to say about the Falkreath quest. Neither Siddgeir or Nenya seem to care that I killed the dragon for them.

I do recall many years ago, many many characters ago, I had the letter to talk to the Jarl of Falkreath for absolutely ages. By the time I went to talk to him, he seemed to have forgotten that he'd written to me! Another time, I was in a jarl's Longhouse (I forget where, but I think it was Falkreath) and I couldn't get out! There seemed to be no NPC who could help, but something was blocking the door. I think there was some quest where I had to do something as we where all trapped in there, but I forget the details. Could it have been Dawnstar and something to do with the museum?

I'll try camping out at Ancient's Ascent, as you suggested, and see what happens. I could always resort to the console, but I don't want to complete the open dragon quest by mistake.

The dragon did die in an odd manner, though. He was doing fine, about 70% hp left, and I hit him with an elven arrow coated in one of my Health Drain poisons. It was not all THAT strong, I think about 5 hp per second for 9 seconds, and he was at about 60% hp and as my two companions and I pelted him with arrows, he suddenly fell out of the sky.

It still completed the quest and removed it from my journal, though, so probably irrelevant.

Cheers!
