Game keeps crashing, Nvidia issue

Ok, so I've been having this problem a while. My game will crash, usually when fast traveling, leaving Home Plate into DC, sometimes just random. I'll get a prompt from Buffout 4. Crash log says its:

"Exception_Access_Violation" at 0x07fee573c332 nvwgf2umx.dd+075c332

Now, I googled this problem and tried the 'Weapon Debris Fix' for Nvidia (I have a RTX 2060). The weapon debris setting was already off btw. The game still crashes. Is there something else that could cause this? Do I need to start a new game with the fix? I'm getting tired of dealing with this, I feel like its a gamble every time I play. I would really appreciate some help with this.

Weird thing; even when the prompt comes up, I can still play the game if I Alt+Tab back to the game. Would doing this cause further problems or is it safe to keep playing like that?

Thank you in advance

I think you probably meant nvwgf2umx.dll.

Do the crashes affect exclusively Fallout 4? When did the crashes start? What's your Windows build version?

You can try:

1) Updating or resinstalling GPU drivers

2) Verifying you don't have unstable "overclock" settings (if applicable)

3) Running a memory scan for hardware issues

4) Posting the full log here or somewhere as someone might be able to help with tracing back the issue to its source

5) Checking recently installed Windows or driver updates

6) Examining the Event Viewer for any relevant logs

7) Turning on and off overlays (e.g. Steam overlay)

8 ) Ensuring all F4SE plugins have the necessary admin rights to access folders utilized by them (if applicable)

9) Updating the BIOS

I have been lately experiencing massive FPS drops with a rtx 3070 and r7 5700x.

I am wondering if it is a driver issue.

I have the `Weapon Debris Fix` mod installed and other performance mods that helps with this issue. It just started with the last two recent updates for the drivers.

I am wondering if it is the driver or something within mods.

Hey, sorry the late reply, been a rough few weeks. I started a new game after uninstalling some mods that I thought might be an issue but had another crash last nite, same issue, I think. I'll attach the Buffout4 log here. I'm not entirely sure what to look for in these but I'm hoping someone does.

The crash seems to be related to "nvwgf2umx.dll". A Microsoft file for Nvidia drivers. Acc. to your crashlog you are still on Win7. A possible solution can be a graphics driver update/ update your OS. Or you could try to open the command prompt with admin rights and run the command "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes). This looks for damaged system files and tries to repair them. As I see you are on the pre next-gen Steam version, so verifying game file integrity would be no option unless you want to update.

Yes, I am still on Win7. I planned to get a whole new PC last year but I've had a rough year with jobs and money. I also dont have internet at the moment. I'm hoping to finally get a new PC this year tho, but until then I'm hoping to try to fix this. Oddly I am still able to play when the prompt comes up if I just Alt-Tab back to the game. Would that harm anything, corrupt it further?

I'll go out on a limb and guess it shouldn't corrupt your save, no, it also is unlikely to damage anything else, especially if this has been going on for a while. Just don't leave important unsaved docs open in the background.

One thing I would do just in case is occasional named saves, by entering "save whatever_name_for_the_savegame" (when you don't see that save in the list because you picked a different character, you can still always load it with "load save_filename"). Do that liberally before testing/changing things, so you can quickly go back without having to second-guess which is the save you want etc.

Maybe look at the your most recently installed/changed mods, and see if you playing without any of them fixes it? It's tricky with a crash that just happens occasionally, so if in doubt, don't stress, just alt-tab.

And all the best for getting back on your feet ❤️

I am bit confused. When you can Alt+Tab back into your game that means the game didn't crash, but has minimized or is frozen. Right? Minimizing during gameplay can happen sometimes depending on background processes. If the game freezes you could try this for the pre next-gen FO4: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/75216 as soon as you have internet back. I also don't believe that tabbing back into the game corrupts anything, but you can make backups of your working saves to a different folder from time to time.

Good luck for finding the culprit and for your future.

The way I read it they get a Buffout prompt, but the game doesn't crash, and presumably after closing the prompt they have to alt-tab back to the game.

I believe you are right. So blackhand8657 gets an error message from Buffout and the game minimizes, but is still running. I ask myself whether this is more related to Buffout than to Nvidia. I don't use it so it might be a stupid question - is it possible to disable (not uninstall) Buffout midgame and see what happens?
