can we start banning mods that are like "for how to install/updated version of the mod join my discord!" please

Recommended Posts

I've used this site quietly for years now, and this is a trend I'm sick of seeing. It's not only incredibly obnoxious, but it's also dangerous and poses a risk to game archival. I'm not joining some random user's Discord to learn how to manually install a mod it should be in the mod's description. Period.

What happens if that user gets banned on Discord? The instructions for how to install the mod disappear, and it becomes a mod no one's going to know how to install in 5–10 years.

Aside from that, I run my own Discord, and we've had a lot of people get their accounts hacked over the years. And in several cases they specifically say they joined a Discord from Nexus Mods, and then suddenly their account (based on descriptions) joined a botnet command-and-control server. Then they got logged out and just like that, their account was gone, and they never got it back again.

Can staff actually start doing something about this, or what? It has to be against some kind of TOS to upload a mod but then put any mod updates or install instructions on a Discord server that Nexus Mods cannot moderate or control.

Telling someone "Talk to me on discord for support" should be straight-up bannable. Not only is it an information black hole as you said, but nobody should have to jump through the array of flaming hoops that infest every chatroom on that platform just to ask a simple question.

If you have time to type "Talk to me on discord" you have time to actually provide a solution. If you can't make that time, then Nexus staff should give you all the time you need with a nice vacation.

Modders are under no obligation to provide support beyond the initial upload.

Often other people will provide support on mod pages, it doesn't have to be the author, if the comments are disabled then you should avoid the mod unless you know and trust the author, the same goes for mods where updates are offsite, the offsite file could be malicious and it's not worth the risk.
