AncientSpaceAeon
Creating mods is kinda . . . free. Use TES Construction Set, here : http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/updates_utilities.htmAnd find out all about using it, here : http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Main_Page That's the best one (and the only one) if you are going to mod something. But there still extra utilities that may help you. (You don't need it right now, I think.) Good Luck ! (Be sure to ask someone here about modding.)

bben46
The biggest mistake I see in beginners is to try to learn too many different programs at once. Then they discover they didn't really need all of them. Learn the CS first. Then when you get to a point where you are ready to try something outside, look at several alternatives. There are free alternatives to every expensive program you see. When you are ready to try something outside of the CS, let us know what you want to do and you will probably get several suggestions as to the best tool. AncientSpaceAeon
Except if you are more skilled at modelling, you could help those in big projects, example like Middle Earth Role-Playing, The Coloured Rooms, or just help the not so big projects. You should tried them both, althrough I suggest learning the CS first.
mothent
CS so far is a basic tool on my part one of the easiest ive used for anything but im still gona learn just about everything i could on it before i move to modeling. From what i understand modeling is the hardest part.
alex2avs
and with moddeling comes animating and uv mapping (uv mapping is easy (most of cases) but can take lots of time)
AncientSpaceAeon
I think heightmap editing and massive scripts are worse than modelling (Because I tried three of them). Animating isn't needed for static object. (I tried to start modding at 10, but only suceeds at 11.)
