The best "starter" mods for a new player

Hello guys

I stumbled upon this site while looking for mods for Oblivion. I hear mods can really make or break the experience, and I'm also curious to see if these mods can fix some of the game's flaws.

There are so many mods available, so I don't know which ones I should get to start out with. I'm just looking for some stable modifications that can enhance the experience - not warp it into something else entirely. For example, my first and only character has majored in many non-combat skills which is making the game ridiculously difficult (back pedaling for a few minutes and turning enemies into walking pin-cushions just isn't fun). I enjoy difficult games, but using half of a quiver of arrows on a single target is both unrealistic and just plain silly.

I understand it's a big game, but I'm 25 hours in at level 17 or so. It would be really depressing to start a fresh character just so I can make him more combat-heavy.

So what mods would you consider to be "staples" in the mod community? Which mods would be advisable for newbies like myself? And more importantly, which mods would address the game's flaws?

Thank you for your time, and sorry if I posted this in the wrong section (it was either this or the General Oblivion section).

:whistling: tl;dr version: What mods would you suggest for a noob?

I had much the same problem when I was just starting out with it. Using up all my arrows on very low level enemies, and hacking away at a slaughterfish for 5 minutes with hardly a dent in its health. Anyway, instead of a mod, maybe all you need to do is turn down the difficulty slider a bit, until it gets to a more believable level. That's what I did. And as you level up, you should increase the difficulty slider more and more, so it remains a good challenge.

If you are looking to fix the games flaws, then I would highly suggest the unoffical patches as it fixes many of those flaws.

I've experimented with some mods, and I'm starting to get a feel for it. I keep hearing good things about the FCOM mod, and I'm tempted to try it out. Despite it being difficult to install, it should be fine as long as I follow the instructions.

However, I'm 30 hours into the game now, with a level 20 character. I'm roughly halfway through the main story according to some guides I've read. I'm thinking I should complete the story with this character and then install FCOM and start a new game. Is this a good idea, or should I just install FCOM right away?

(sorry for the double post; I don't think anyone would check the thread if I just edited the last post)

Go ahead and finish what you want to finish before you install any of the overhaul mods (OOO, MMM, Frans, Fcom). Once you install one of the overhauls you really need to start a new game to use them. You can of course turn them off and continue your old character later, but in my experience old characters get put on the wayside after making a new one in this game.

I haven't implemented a full Fcom yet (shame on me), but I do love having OOO(Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul) and MMM (Martigan's Monster Mod) running together.

And not to make matters worse, but you might want to get the Oblivion Mod Manager. If you know of Fcom you probably know of this handy tool already.

Welcome the world of oblivion mods. Good luck and have fun.
