FYI - This PC is still going strong and I have not had the need to re-install Windows 7 yet! With Windows XP, it was almost a yearly ritual to re-install just to keep performance optimal.

this thread was made and completed before i even joined the site, but damn thats a pretty freaking solid build! only gets me more excited to build mine here shortly (though like half the price of yours lol)

If you ever need to reinstall windows, buy an SSD and install windows on it.

It was painful to run updates on my old junk-PC after using my new PC with SSD for a month... so slooow

EDIT: Oh, you were already going to buy an SSD.

Yeah, went almost a year waiting on SATA 3.0 SSD but couldn't wait any longer. Here is a copy of my results with this PC from this thread:

EDIT: Dec 12, 2010

Intel Core i7-960 3.2 GHz

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 (rev 1.0)

Corsair XMS3 DDR3 RAM (12 GB)

XFX Radeon HD 5870 Video card

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

This system currently has 3 SATA hard drives (which are currently the main bottleneck)

  • Primary: Western Digital 250 GB
  • Secondary: Western Digital 1 TB
  • Tertiary: Western Digital 1 TB

Here is the current Windows Experience Index:

Processor: 7.6

Memory: 7.6

Graphics: 7.8

Gaming Graphics: 7.8

Primary Hard Disk: 5.3

I am about to replace the Western Digital drives with an Intel X25-M Solid State Drive (160 GB) and will post the results of the test after the upgrade.

EDIT: Dec 13, 2010

Here is the new Windows Experience Index using the new SSD:

Processor: 7.6

Memory: 7.6

Graphics: 7.8

Gaming Graphics: 7.8

Primary Hard Disk: 7.5

I hope my i5-3570k@4,5ghz and R7950 wf@1150/1500mhz can hold out at least 3 years too.

After ~3 years (or when I cant run games in ultra anymore) Im going to take my brothers R7950 wf and use it for crossfire.

And if the CPU power is not enough, I'll just "uncork" the 3570k and remove the useless thermal paste that is inside the CPU and replace it with liquid pro/something similar to raise the clocks even higher.
