Shakkara
but for those of us who are too scared 2 touch dos its a lifesaver :P Those to scared to use DOS or touch anything that might look like part of the OS are lamerz :D Do you think I just looked at it and I instantly knew how everything worked? No, I trashed my own PC hundreds of times. But that's what you learn things from. Trial and error! Damn M$ and it's software are doing nothing less then turning your PC in somekind of XcretementBox, where you don't have control of anything and sending all your private information to M$ behind your back. WinXtraPieceofpoo is just a huge piece of spyware wrapped in giftpaper, and they got even worse plans for it's successor.

HeLLL
Hmm the most difficult question. Ok please be aptient I will explain <remember theses are MY opinons and experiances others may disagree and you know what. Sweet as> SuSE 8.1 My current distro. I would recommended this one whole heartily. Has great hardware reconigtion and has direct support for NVIDIA cards <2d not 3d you have to download those as they are propriety software>. Easy to install and maintain. An extrmely powerfull distro that can be used as a server <although all linux distros can this seems to be the best. Webmin is NOT installed or availble though off the cds :( > Great community support. Although not necsercily a n00bs choice of first time distro; its user friendly install and control panel will ease the pain of using linux :) <YaSt2> Mandrake 9.1 Awesome distro especially for n00bs. Very easy to instrall but maintaining can be a bit of a problem. It absoultly HATES my DVD rom <go to mount it and it goes crzy :)> Alot of bug fixes from Mandrake 9.0 <never use point releases :)> Excellent control panel for changing settings etc and has a LARGE community also behind it. Has also alot of commercial backing so most of the programs/games will most likely have Mandrake Kernel Archerticture specfic files for download. RedHat. Hate redhat. We won't go there. USe if you feel like getting shafted. <HeLLL hands a cup of coffee to the poor guys at the KDE devel team having to fix all the bugs Redhat had made when it choose to screw with KDE> Um there are several more but Im going to be here all night. If you need any further information post or pm me :)
Baphomet
You want a trip down memory lane? Anyone else here cut their teeth on a Radio Shack TRS-80? How about the TRS-80 Color Computer (aka the CoCo)?? IIRC, the basic model came with 16Kb (that's right people KILO-bytes) of RAM but was expandable (at the factory mind you!) to 32Kb. The CoCo II would boast a whopping 64Kb of RAM. Programming was done in BASIC or nothing at all - and it was TRS-BASIC, at that. If you wanted to use anything else you bought a compiler. Modems back then ran at a whopping 300 Baud, or, if you really had money, 1200 baud. Floppies were 5.25 inches, that held around 300Kb, formatted if I remember correctly. Games, for the most part, came on ROM packs.
Shakkara
How about the Philips Videopac G7000 I had (and still it works), which started production in 1978. It has an 8-bit, 1mhz Intel 8048H CPU, a whopping 256 BYTES of RAM, and games were supplied on cardridges with 1kb capacity! Games had 8 colors and a resolution of 280x192. It's superior to all current popular consoles, since it has a keyboard!
