I was wondering, it's remembrance day today.

But did anyone actually remember to remember?

I have this saddening feeling that people are beggining to forget, and when that happens, the tyrants come back.

oh dear. :*(

I'm afraid I forgot to remember. I had a test to do at 11:30 so I didn't really have time to think about it! :/

I don't think anyone will ever forget enough to let an idiot like Hitler back into power again. Those were different times, the world has changed. We have nukes now to deter eachother from wars. I think the only problem we might have now is if a suicidal maniac gets hold of nukes (see: North Korea, paranoia over Iraq). And of course the continuing terrorist threat.

V-E Day is May eigth. Today is Armistice Day.

So yes, Vaanic, your fears are justified.

The 11th hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, 1918.

The end of the war to end all wars.

Right, we can all see how well that works. Now, instead of a nation of isolationists that have to be dragged into a war, we have a nation that believes in pre-emptive war.

We've come such a long way (or is that fallen back...)

There was a brief segment on BBC News this morning covering this very topic. In it there were 10-second interviews asking about Armistice Day, and what people thought it meant. Generally, half the people had a vague idea and the rest (teenagers mainly) had no idea. Do you want to know what one girl thought?

She thought it was something to do with the vulking Labour Party!!! :angry2:

Has our society really degenerated to this level of lunacy? Livy, the famous Roman historian said (I'm paraphrasing here): "To forget the mistakes of the past is to be doomed to repeat them." This means that we MUST remember, else wars will continue to happen, and yes, people start thinking like Hitler again (I take this day to be a remembrance of all those who died in war, not just WWI. This is possibly the wrong official view but what the hell, do I need an excuse?)

Batesmotel34, perhaps, yes, we have become foolish in our war-like policies. Is that reason to forget wars? Exactly the opposite as far as I can see.

The people who fought in the two world wars are dying. Its the duty of those who follow on from them to remember their deeds and learn from them. Anyone who disagrees with this is, I'm sorry to see, an idiot. And the girl who thought today was about the Labour Party should be strung up by her bloody thumbs...

Actually, it was changed to Remembrance day after WW2. In order that we remember all conflict. Including the war on terror.

and of course, it was started by the hell on earth that was WW1, and reinforced by the hell on earth that was WW2.
