Retribution
I'm running Vista Home Premium with a 2 core 3 ghz processor, a gig total of physical memory, 460 mb available of physical memory, 1 gig of ram, 2.2 gigs of virtual memory, 1.4 gigs of available virtual memory, and a Geforce 8500 GT. I exceed all of the recommendations for Oblivion, but I still get terrible fps in lots of places no matter what. I'll have settings on high, and get 5 fps, and then turn them on low and get 6 fps. I always hear about people with Qarl's texture pack and a rig similar to mine getting 30 fps average- but I don't know how. I'm really confused about this whole thing. I'm not using any texture packages. If I completely surpass all of the game's recommendations, why is it running so slow? These are my official specs http://i25.tinypic.com/2vvry3q.jpg

Retribution
I don't even know how to do the video card tweaks. My video card doesn't have a control panel. Also, Oblivion used to run much better about half a year ago.
Retribution
Yes, I just downloaded the latest driver yesterday, but there was no control panel. Where would it be found, if I had one?Would this happen to be it? http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_system_tools_6.05.html
bben46
I used to run better a year ago too, but I am a year older now, as is your computer. :whistling: Like people, computers get slower and crankier with age. The system part of the tweak guides has a very detailed explanation of how to get the most out of your system no matter what the age. The main parts are:Take out the trash - run the disk cleanup in your system toolsClean up the mess - run a defrag on your hard drive. To find your nvidia control panel, look in the program list Start>All programs>Nvidia There should be a listing for a control panel there.
Retribution
There isn't a listing for a control panel there. I think this might be the program, not sure though. http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_system_tools_6.05.html I ran a defrag on my hard drive yesterday, so there's no problem with that. I'll try a disk cleanup now. I realize that computers get slower with age, but my computer runs Oblivion ALOT slower than it did, say, 6 months ago. If you do not tweak the ini Oblivion will not use the second core, 1MB RAM and vista are good enough... if you do not intend to use demanding programs. Every NVidia card comes with the panel, you just need to right click with the mouse on any empty portion of the desktop. Windows register gets bloated with the time and use... there are so many things to cripple performance you'd not believe... believe me, you need to do a rigid clean up on your system and the above mentioned TweakGuide is one of the bests sites to start with. The 8500 videocard is enough to play it, but at moderate settings only.
Retribution
Well, I used to play it with little lag and high settings, so I dunno. Also, there is DEFINITELY no Nvidia control panel on my computer. In programs, by right clicking, nothing. What are you saying about Oblivion won't use the second core if I don't tweak the ini? Retribution
Also, if this could add any sort of insight into this issue, when I am in the first area in Kvatch before you first enter the chapel, walking towards the chapel will give me 8 fps, while walking towards the gate will slowly give me up to about 55 fps.
