badboynick
So, I'm in Barbados right now visiting some family and friends for the summer, and my friend had a "less than legal" copy of Fallout 3. He told me I should try it out, I did, and now I'm in love with the game. I plan to buy a legit copy of the game when I get back to the U.S, and my question is if the save files from this game will be playable on the legit copy I buy. I've been reading about Games for Windows Live, and they sound pretty ruthless about game saves or something. So is there a way I can play the save files I have from the "less than legit copy" on the one I plan to purchase?
gsmanners
Actually, your saves should work fine (assuming you're buying the PC version). You might notice that this site allows you to post said save files.
Gishank
You can, simply copy the savegames from the "C:\Users\<Username>\Documents\My Games\Fallout3\Saves" folder (Vista, XP differs), into the same location on your PC. Assuming that he had no major mods enabled when you were playing then you should encounter no issues.
xaechireon
For Windows XP, I believe it is "C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Games\Fallout3\Saves"
kevlev
You're in Barbados? Are you having fun?
badboynick
@kevlev: Yea, I'm having tons of fun. Crop Over (which is this huge month long festival) was going on, so I went to a lot of parties and stuff. Thanks for askin, man. So, how does GFWL actually work then? Will I be able to play under an account with these saves? Or for me to want to play these save files, will I have to not log into GFWL? If so, is it that simple to not log in and play? Thanks in advance for answering my many questions.
Gishank
You can play them on your account if you place it in the folder, "C:\Users\<Username>\Documents\My Games\Fallout3\Saves\<GFWLAccountName>", however you will not earn any achievements for actions already completed. badboynick
One more question. I plan to buy the Game of the Year edition with all of the DLC. Will the DLC interfere at all?
gsmanners
I don't see a problem, considering DLCs are really just plugins. With the exception of BS, they all are freely playable anytime after the Escape quest, and BS is playable after the last vanilla quest. In fact, I would suggest you use FOMM to selectively load DLCs at the point in the game where you want to start playing (especially BS). http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=
badboynick
Thanks all you guys, you've been really helpful. I'm still a little concerned though, so if anyone with a legit copy of Fallout, has all five of the DLC installed and willing to try out my save please reply on this tread or pm me. I can send it through e-mail, Windows Live Messenger or Skype. This would solidify my purchase of this great game; thanks again, guys.
