Nope, BAD idea. Oblivion is strong because of the storyline and quests, and Oblivion world is immensely HUGE(took years to create it). If more than thousands of player play Oblivion online, then it will be very slow, because oblivion world isn't THAT big !!!

Oblivion is 16 square miles (41 km2) in size. Imagine thousands of player playing in there.

Compared with London that is 659 square miles (1706 sq km2).

no no no no.. thats not what im saying i would like to see oblivion in a playable format where you and like up to three friends hop on and play together... i think that it would be fun to do some of the more difficult quests with a friend... that and a mod to allow you to join the yellow team in the arena would be fun to because then you can have some pvp with friends in there too to settle the score of who knows how to fight better and etc...

In any way, Oblivion gameplay is not suited for multiplayer at all. Almost all player-only activities seem unworkable with multiplayer, from fast-travel and rest to sneak, lockpick and so on. I heard once there is a multiplayer patch, but I also heard it is rather unplayable.

Also, Ovlivion's most praised feature, without which there's no point of playing it at all... mods. Just HOW are you imagine to do that? Of course, you all may have the same set... but what if not and that causes a problem?

The idea for making a multiplayer mode for Oblivion has been around for a long time but alas it just ain't meant to be. It's a really tempting idea to have but the game is just not made to be that way.

There were a number of past attempts to make a multiplayer mode for Oblivion but the projects were all abandoned due to lots of incompatibilities and bugs as mentioned by Sarya above. If you search for Oblivion Multiplayer on Google, you can find a lot of references to these long abandoned projects.
