Need Help

For some reason everytime I try to start up it gives me an error. I was wondering if anyone could help me with it? It says:

Falied to initialize renderer

NiXAdapterDesc::GetDeviceCaps() failed.

It only seems to happen when I start up the game, after you click on the Start Menu Icon and it takes you to the Game Menu.

GetDeviceCaps is a directX command. DirectX is trying to find out if your graphics card will run Oblivion, and is deciding that it will not (thus "failed"). That means either that your graphics card really won't run Oblivion, or that, at the very least, you need to update your drivers.

You might try Google next time-- any time you get an error message for pretty much anything, just copy it and paste it into the Google search field and you'll find that many, many people have asked that question already, and gotten it answered.

That's how I got this answer..... :biggrin:

well i took a look and it told me how. check DXDiag to see if DirectDraw is enabled. in my case it says it isn't available. how would i now fix that.

It'll be easier if you tell us about your system, what processor, videocard and so on.

you may try the Video properties, navigate thru the "Advanced Configurations" and you should see a TAB about problem solving... if the slider is too much to the left the directdraw will be disabled. Optimally it should be all the way right.

well it is an Intel® Core Duo CPU T9500 @2.60GHz 4.00 GB RAM and 32-bit operating system. It was made by Dell. The original graphics card drivers was erased when our computer was wiped because we had a virus now its a Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.

I don't know where to get new drivers and I've checked just about everywhere. Even Goolge and Bing. Its a Dell XPS and runs on Windows Vista. It was orginally a gaming laptop and cost $2000 and I don't want to have to buy a new graphics card because the one thats in there is fine, but the computers just not picking it up.

Hopefully this information will help you.

Here is the link to the Dell support site. You can download all of the original drivers for your system there. Be sure to check for updates after you install the originals.

When it asks for your Service tag, it is usually on a sticker on the bottom of a laptop and on the back of a desktop. The service tag will allow you to go directly to the exact drivers that were factory loaded on your computer.
